She was on with Shannon Bream this morning to discuss declining achievement in education. It was a very frustrating interview but her answers were no surprise.
Bream asked about the somewhat dramatic decline in test scores. Of course Pringle blamed covid than said we need to focus on solutions. She immediately jumped on social inequities (ie racism). Bream should have said those things aren't new so that can't be the reason for the recent decline in scores but she didn't. Then Pringle claimed that kids can't learn when they're hungry. Bream should have pointed out that poor kids get free breakfast and lunch at school, they just have to show up. Finally Beam asked about the cost of educating illegal immigrants. Pringle answered by saying that we don't lack the resources, we lack the will. Bream should have asked what resources we have considering we have a $32 trillion debt and something like $80 trillion of unfunded liabilities. IMO Bream did a poor job by not following up.
On a side note Bream showed the top and bottom 3 states for 8th grade math scores and the top and bottom 3 states for school spending per pupil.
Math Scores
Top 3: Mass, Utah, Idaho
Bottom 3: New Mexico, D.C., West Virginia
Spending:
Top 3: New York ($26k), D.C. ($25k), Vermont ($25k)
Bottom 3: Idaho ($9k), Utah ($9k), Arizona ($10k)
Perhaps somebody can explain why states that spend so little (UT, ID) get good results while areas that spend a lot (D.C.) get poor results.
