My mother in law is acquainted with the daughter of former Baltimore Colt, Alan Ameche. She said that I would know her husband, who played at Penn State... last name of Capalletti. “Yes, I vaugely recall a player by that name” I said...

Anyway, I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of athletic genes these two would bring together. There are lots of factors that go into athletic success, but I am wondering what some of the other great athletic pairings might be. Can anyone think of any?

Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf have 2 kids, and their oldest, son Jaden, committed to play baseball at Southern Cal last year (when he was 15). Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciapara will probably have some athletic kids. Same with Gabrielle Reece and Laird Hamilton.

Do you remember when LaVar dated Serena Williams?

I was trying to think of who Andre Agassi married, but forgot about Mia Hamm and Nomar.

Former Jim Thorpe Award winner and NFL Cornerback Aaron Ross is married to 5'8, four time Olympic Gold/five time World Championship Gold Medalist Sonya Richards. They just had their first son last year but she has stated that she plans to have more now that she's officially retired. Those kids are gonna be faaaast!

Speaking of Va Tech, there is the Curry family.

Dell Curry was a star shooting guard for the Hokies (also had a 6-1 record as a pitcher and got drafted in the 14th round by the Orioles) and then played 16 years in the NBA, becoming the all-time leading scorer for the Charlotte Hornets. Sonya was a high school track star and very good volleyball player for Va Tech. They produced super star Steph and younger brother Seth is also in the NBA.

The McCaffrey family comes to mind. On the dad's side you've got an NFL WR and an uncle that was a pretty good BBall player. On the mom's side you've got a former WR holder in the 100 meter dash. Put them together and you've got a 1st round draft pick.

Also, Ed’s wife was a soccer player at Stanford. Brother Billy was all American b-ball at duke and Vanderbilt. Monica McCaffrey was probably best athlete. Parade AA in hoops at ALlentown Central Catholic and played at Georgetown.

John Elway's ex-wife, Janet, was a world class swimmer in high school and at Stanford. She won a gold medal in the 400m IM at the World University games and probably would have gone to the Olympics except for the American boycott in '80.

Sure it wasn't (edited) Mike Cappelletti ? He married Ameche's daughter Catherine.

Interesting article from a few years ago about the connections via marriage of 3 Heisman winners, Glenn Davis, Alan Ameche, and John Cappellettii:

So..this list...to be listed as a sports couple you have to do what.....shag an athlete? Good lord. They’ve missed an entire every four years Olympic Style shagging at the games.

To be a couple, let’s let them be married and/or have kids. Woods and Vonn simply don’t count just because they porked for a while.

I won a blueberry pie eating contest and my wife won a baking competition. I also won a best guacamole contest.

I cannot imagine a more perfect response to my post or this thread topic.
:confused:o_O
Congrats on many levels!

Ashton Eaton has won the Gold Medal in the Decathlon at each of the past 2 Olympics.

His wife (Brianne Theisen) won the Bronze Medal in the Heptathlon at the last Olympics.

They have no kids - as of the moment.

Surprised I haven't seen Tim Montgomery and Marion Jones listed yet. At one time they were each the fastest man and woman on the planet. Tim Montgomery Jr. ought to be able to fly.

Or perhaps children from her current husband will be great sprinters:
from wiki:

On February 24, 2007, Jones married Barbadian sprinter and 2000 Olympic 100m bronze medalist Obadele Thompson.[9] Their first child together, a son named Ahmir, was born in June 2007.[10] She gave birth to daughter Eva-Marie on June 28, 2009.[11]

Let's hope the kids can avoid PEDs and lying.

Laila Ali and Curtis Conway's kids should be pretty impressive athletes.

Davis Phinny and Connie Carpenter Phinny. Davis was a two time stage winner in the Tour D’France in the late 80’s, Connie Carpenter is still the youngest American woman to compete in the Winter Olympics 1972 in Speed Skating. She won the gold medal in the women’s cycling road race in the 1984 Olympics. Their son Taylor won several junior and under 23 world championships in cycling, and was one of t(e most promising young American riders until he nearly lost his leg in a racing accident 4 years ago. He’s not as fast as before but is still racing and is currently racing in the Tour.

Incorrect, it was John's younger brother - Mike, who married Ameche's daughter - Catherine. IF you read the above article more closely you will note, "her daughter, Catherine, married the BROTHER of 1973 Heisman winner, Penn State running back John Cappelletti."

Not quite incidentally, I am a fraternity brother of both Cappallettis along with many other PSU football and other sports athletes of that era. Tim Curley and Rick Dandrea were in my pledge class. Both Paul Suhey and Jimmy Cefalo were past presidents... I was honored when I was presented with my bid to join FIJI by Linebacker U greats - Ed O'Neil and Jim Laslavic. I even occasionally ate training table with the players, as some of my frat brothers were trying to convince me to walk-on to the FB team.

Furthermore and most eerily, I also knew - Jim Calhoun, the janitor who testified about allegedly witnessing a sexual assault by Jerry Sandusky in the Lasch building's showers. My former girlfriend's Dad owned several apartment buildings in town and employed me part-time while in school to help maintain the properties. Jim was another one of Mr. Baker's workers at that time, and I remember him as a good honest hard-working Viet Nam vet. Sorry to have learned that he suffers from dementia.

Ultimately, NOBODY ever said anything about Sandusky being "strange" at THAT time... and believe me, they would have been mumbling something about Jerry IF they knew something. Someday I hope to piece together a full understanding of this tragic incident. (rant over)

You are right - I meant to type Mike and typed John. Brain cramp on my part. I edited my post to state that it is Mike.

I am also a PSU Fiji, class of '78. I think I know who you are.
(Btw, my name may have been changed for BWI purposes to protect the innocent. Or to protect my innocence!)
