Best National Anthem ever!

The ESPN E:60 show about this performance was outstanding. It's shown occasionally -- must see.
Count me among those who just don't get Taylor Swift when I see performances by Whitney. Their voices and persona are not comparable.
Whitney Houston is an all time great voice. Swift has a mediocre voice. Swift is smart and has surrounded herself with exceptional entertainment experts who produce great live productions. People spend billions of dollars to see her productions, not to hear her voice. Swift is like Michael Jackson.
Here is an ESPN article about it. The author is a bit melodramatic as sports journalists often are. But still a lot of good background to the story.

Yep. You are right. She is a smart cookie but just a decent singer -- not an all time great like Whitney Houston.
Taylor is so smart that once she became a famous entertainer, she never sang publically the national anthem. She knows that she would be compared to Whitney and would come up short. I did a google search and found that she sang the national anthem prior to a Philliies' world series game in 2008 when she was a teenager. She hasn't sung it since. Taylor Swift is a really smart person who makes great decisions. She doesn't make mistakes in career decisions.

And she avoids the trappings of fame, so far. No drama or questionable relationships.
The opera singer who now does the National Anthem at NY Rangers games does a remarkable job. The National Anthem before many NHL games, especially playoff games, is often the highlight of the games.
one difference, in my mind, is that Swift is an artist while Whitney was a performer. By that I mean that Swuft writes, composes, scores and arranges her music along with others. She also performs. whitney has some writing credit but really was a performer. MJ was also an artist, not just a performer.
I am not a big fan of Swift's but credit where it is due.
Yep, I agree. Swift is better than Whitney is all respects (especially in her personal life), but Whitney had an all time great voice.
I know a guy who used to hang out at the recording studios in LA. He's a great saxophonist and is on several albums. He said that he has witnessed several recordings where they had some person come in and sing for Michael McDonald. Once they had it down, they'd being MM in and have the guy sing for MM. MM would then stand up at the microphone, belt out his lines, and leave. I have no idea if it is true to be honest. But it makes sense. MM had a fantastic voice and wasn't needed for much else. He did a lot of backup singing.
Melodramatic is an understatement. Truly an amazing time. It literally gets better each time I watch it and brings a tear to my eye every single time. Just absolute perfection.
I wish Steely Dan kept him away from Peg. His vocals are highly annoying on that classic.
Whitney Houston & Taylor Swift have sung good renditions of our National Anthem, BUT and I do mean BUT no one was better in my opinion than Robert Merrill who sang the National Anthem for special New York Yankee games.
