Along with Glov’s theme, but for us non IPA guys, it’s Porter and Stout season! Some of my favs are:
Porters
Edmund Fitzgerald by Great Lakes
Black Butte by Deshutes
Founders
Stout’s
Saucony Creek Imperial
Lancaster Brewing Milk Stout
Deshutes Obsidian

Old Rasputin by North Coast and Black Chocolate Stoudt by Brooklyn. Both are Russian Imperial and great examples of the style.

Actually just had some Lancaster Shoo fly. Like that too. Sweet, but nowhere near as much as I thought it would be.

Good list. I just had Lancaster Brewing’s Molasses Porter last night and it was very good. I can’t stand peanut butter or strong coffee flavor in my porter and stouts. I actually prefer a good German swartzbier, where they are so insecure that they have to add crazy stuff to make it stand out. Also if you enjoy malty goodness, do yourself a favor and try a tasty Belgian dopplebock called Celebrator.

love Xocoveza
the IPA thread and some comments about Michigan beer has led to me opening a 2016 Bell's Black note, with plans to enjoy a 2018 Bells BA Expedition Stout later.
The Black Note is awesome btw

I want to try Victory Java Stout this year.
A couple days ago I had an Aslin Stripes, which checked in at ~18% ABV - not my thing.

This is my time of the year. I love the porters and stouts. The maltier the better. The coffee porters are among my favorites, which is kinda strange because I am not a coffee drinker. I like to stop by the Happy Valley Brewing Company for the Joe when I'm in town for a game.

What about the brown ales?

Smuttynose Old Brown Dog
Woodstock Brewery Pig's Ear Brown
Brooklyn Brewing Brown Ale
Shipyard Deep Devil Brown

It's always porter and stout season in my house, I stock up in the winter and enjoy them year round while shaking my head at IPA drinkers. I like far too many to list. Locally I love Austin Beerworks Sputnik. They call it a RICO stout, Russian, Imperial, Coffee, Oatmeal stout. It's my favorite canned Austin beer. At the brewery they have a bourbon barrel aged version called Midnight Swordfight that's even better, but sadly it's not in stores. I love barrel aged porters and stouts. A few that come to mind.

Ballast Point Victory at Sea and the barrel aged High West Victory at Sea
Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout
Deschutes Black Butte Porter and the special anniversary editions
Nearly anything from Clown Shoes brewery
512 Pecan Porter
Bell's Porter & Kalamazoo Stout

Excellent post sir!

I thought I did try once the Edmund Fitzgerald but I don't remember a whole helluva lot about that night to be honest!

Hardywood Gingerbread Stout for me. It's a seasonal, but it put the brewery on the map. This year's is coming out right about now.

That looks awesome. Going to try and find it. Almost everything from Southern Tier is from above average to outstanding. And they make Pumpking, arguably the best pumpkin beer out there
Agreed about ST in general and Pumpking specifically.

Interesting personal story. My wife got me the”beer of the month club” for Christmas two years ago. I thought I liked IPAs and the shipments tended to be heavy on the IPA samples. But, there were often porters and stouts mixed in. I found that I prefer the porters and stouts. My favorite was probably Lancaster Milk Stout. I rarely order an IPA if I can find a porter or stout instead. Thanks to “beer of the month club”.

Not a Stout or Porter drinker but of the ones I've tried Storm King is one of my faves. Incredible complex flavor.

some of my favorites currently in the fridge:

You should see my fridge, it's got most of that stuff, plus multiples of assassin, mornin delight , HF Damon, Westbrook BA cake variants, and fundamental observation... plus a shit ton of voodoo BRC beers (including manbearpig), and a recent fresh delivery of hops from New England (treehouse, alchemist, Lawson's, HF, Trillium, etc.)

I am actually planning on popping some of my Assassin’s, mornin delight, a darkness vertical, and some barrel theory Threat Level Midnight this weekend with some friends. Chase all that in between with the keg of Alesmith Hawaiian speedway stout I have on tap.

Used to have a massive cellar (Apple brandy BA Mexican cake was always one of my fav’s) but just found aging beers anytime past 2 years was a waste and made them less than what they should be. 1 year to cool them maybe, but anything more is just a waste.

Howard’s Porter :D

This Porter is a favorite among basketball players. Drink it and you’ll shoot much better and jump much higher. However, your ball handling skills will diminish dramatically.

Sounds like a great time, make sure to share a picture of the aftermath with us next week... the bottles, not the guests!
