Michigan State AD Bill Beekman called expansion “inevitable,” and Smith OSU expressed concern over player “wear-and-tear.”

This argument is so old it’s comical. It didn’t seem to stop anyone countrywide from scheduling a BS 12th game against nobody in a open display of grabbing money. But give 6* more teams an extra game to determine a champion?

Oooooooo.

Get on with it already. Stop the facade of caring

*(The two in a final plus the 4 additional teams that will make semifinals beyond what would have been a bowl game)

Smith will get over his concern about wear and tear when OSU just misses the playoffs after winning the B1G.

For those that have discussed the sirius/XM shows. Braden Gall is sitting in for Mark Packer this week. He was trashing the B10 last night for being crybabies. IMO, as long as somebody is voting for the 4 playoff teams, it's not a real playoff.

That just happened. They were pretty much screwed two years in a row. Pretty much looks like the system is now rigged to get at least three ESPN Conference Network Properties in (SEC/ACC) and screw Fox/Big Ten/Pac 12.

No way Notre Dame and Oklahoma deserved to be in over Ohio State this past season. The so called "playoffs" are nothing more than an ESPN controlled invitational beauty contest.

Well Barry Alvarez is a cry baby.

Well Barry Alvarez is a cry baby.

Whatever he is, he's right.

The rigged system beyond sucks. F-ck the fake Playoff. We should go to a Plus One and go back to the old system where the true Big Ten and PAC 12 Champs were guaranteed to play in the Rose Bowl every year. Then at least we know definitely what our goal is without any politics.

After all the Bowls are played, pick the two best teams in the Country to play in a Championship Game. Sure there will still be politics, but at least then it will be more out in the open, and players won't be sitting out the Rose or Sugar Bowls if they know there is still an outside shot for a National Championship.

Doh! I’ve tried to put last season out of my mind. o_O

Uh, no. Then you’ll have the same old crap. An undefeated B1G team plays a crap PAC team in the Rose Bowl, and gets passed over by an 11-1 second place SEC team because the SEC team had a “harder” schedule and beat a tougher opponent in their bowl game.

It’s actually a very simple process:

You take the two....or four.....or six.....or eight.....or 12 teams that beat Pitt each year, those are the teams that get in the playoff. That’s the left side of the bracket.

The right side of the bracket is Alabama.

The larger the playoff gets the more expensive it gets for fans to travel to more games at neutral fields and thus the more likely a playoff game will have to be a home game for somebody. And the more likely a playoff game is a home game for somebody, the more likely a warm weather team is going to have to play outdoors in the north in January. I suspect the warm weather schools will resist that like crazy.

Couldn’t disagree more - when you play in a relatively weak conference and you get shit-canned by mighty Purdue, then your place at the table of 4 belongs to someone else. Besides, they undeservedly got in over PSU a few years ago, so any bitching out of buckeye-ville falls on deaf ears as far as I’m concerned.

Agreed.

(Although the expansion to 8 would mean 4 extra games played.... or one more game for each of 8 teams. Which - obviously - doesn't significantly impact your point...… just clarifying)
Not exactly right, and I wasn’t exactly right either.

Currently 2 teams get one extra game. Those in the finals. Everyone would have played in a bowl.

With 8, 4 teams get 1 extra game and 2 teams get two extra games.

The only format that ignores politics is one that includes the champions and champions deserve to play for more. Politics cans infect selection of the at-large. Have at it. At least being a champion is earned and was done on the field.

If you're talking about how many weeks it takes to do all this, one consideration is that the conference championship games take a week and don't even reduce the number in the playoff field. Between going from 11 to 12 regular season games and 1 week for conference title games and 1 week for a bye, you're using up 14 weeks to get to the point where you're even declaring who will get into the playoff. That's an impediment to a larger playoff.

i can see limiting the OOC games and creating more divisions so that there is more of a "bracket" methodology in 14, or so, games. By that, lets say each team plays ten games divided into division and OOC games. You then have a B1G East Game. A B1G championship game. Then you have the four MNC team game...then the finals. In all, 14 games. The schedule would be harder as you'd drop the MAC and Appy State type games and have more B1G games...but you could still limit it to 14 total games. Downside is the low end B1G teams season would end after only ten games.

I have 2 proposals
1) P5 Champ in - Best G5 Champ in 2 atlarge. higher seeded* team hosts round 1
2) More complex - but would make things very exciting. (The only issue is the Army Navy Game)
a. P5 Championship game winner in (all have it no issues)

1 week later - round 1- at 3 pre-selected cities throughout the US (in different areas of the country so say Indy/Phoenix/Atlanta) (Cities could bid - but multiple regions have to be represented.
The Best 2 G5 champs play
The Best 4 teams who aren't conference champs play - this would include conference champ losers, independents. You could pair the matchups to feature 2 CCG losers (so 1 team doesn't have more rest)
Losers go to bowls (they could save 3 slots and place them in)

The winners from round 1 would advance. Top 8 would be seeded* - Top 4 would have to consist of Conference champs (doesn't have to be from P5)
2 weeks later
8 plays 1, 7 vs 2, etc at the higher seeds home field.
Semis/Championship are the same as today.

This would allow wildcards. It would be highly inclusive. It would punish teams for not winning a conference - and it would force ND to earn its way in by winning a 13th game (like everybody else).

*Seeding would include a strength of schedule component and for fun - add weight to OOC. Make the SOS weighting were a loss doesn't kill a team in the seedings - but a win hugely rewards a team

Both these systems would encourage / reward strong OOC matchups. The $ could offset the loss of the 7th game for most teams - so 2 OOC opponents could be the norm. Most programs would be better off being 1-2 in the OOC and being better prepared for the conference schedule - which if they win - they get in. And honestly if you can't win against 2 good opponents OOC - you probably aren't winning the NC anyway).

The quarterfinals would be played anyway -- just two of those four game would be bowl games and the winners go home and the other two are the current semi finals. The finals would also be played in the current format. So that leaves the new semifinals as the only two additional games to be played by expanding to 8.

Its is simple. Conference champion for the five power conference plus the three next ranked teams. No committee no politics. No protection for notre dame or anyone else. Join a conference in all sports or go Ivy League.
Except the rankings are driving by human polls which also involves politics and subjective nonsense at times. But at least it's an average of many voters instead of the opinion of a handful of CFP committee members who's criteria and decision making processes are not at all transparent.

I'd like to see all P5 conference winners and one G5 team (unsure how to fairly determine this outside of using polls since there are multiple conferences) get automatic berths. If you want to go to 8 teams then add 2 at large berths based either on polls, CFP vote or whatever. I'd be fine with 6 or 8 teams that give all conferences (including G5s) a seat at the table. The challenge with 6 is then bye weeks come into play and that would be subjective so going to 8 makes sense. The higher seed hosts the first round, then the bowls host the semis and finals much like they do today.
