1. He wrote and sent to the DOJ - unsolicited - a long memo asserting that the Special Counsel’s investigation of Trump for obstruction of justice was out of bounds because the President, by definition, cannot commit obstruction of justice. (He must have consulted with Buck.)
2. He has an exceedingly broad view of “executive privilege,” as he demonstrated quite publicly when he supported Ronald Reagan’s attempt to shield Iran-Contra documents from examination. (Reagan’s attempt was slapped down in the courts.)
3. He recommended to Bush 41 the full pardon of ALL of the criminals who participated in the Iran-Contra scandal, which is exactly what Bush 41 did.
Barr obviously wrote that memo as a job application, knowing that someone as amoral as Trump would be likely to nominate as AG the person who offered him the best prospect of either avoiding prosecution or (failing that) being pardoned for any actual or alleged crimes.
Barr is gonna have a rocky road to confirmation, even in a Senate which now gives Republicans a 53-47 majority. We will soon see just how servile the GOP senators are in fact capable of being.
