I was thinking about the BOT nominations expected to open this coming January so I went over to Barry Fenchak's website to see if he was planning to run in 2022. I found this video and thought that before this board shuts down I'd get this out here. After having seen our board operate for years it is obvious that something needs to change. I believe Barry will attempt to make changes, while most of our current Trustees seem to be content with status quo. The only thing that would be certain is that Barry would put forth a serious effort to make positive change.

I have nominated Barry the last few cycles but he doesn’t even show up on the ballot. Does he know how far away he is each year? Does PSU disclose the number of nominations he received?

just because you make the statement doesn't mean it is factual. Are you talking about the alumni-elected trustees? If so, then you would be incorrect. Are you talking about the board as a whole? If so, then you'd have to break it down by issue, as in some cases they do prefer the status quo, and in other cases they don't.

PSU laughs at disclosing.

IMHO, a royal waste of time. I get that there are recurring tactical issues that seem to be adjudicated at the BOT. But the substantive, strategic issues are already settled by the power structure not inhibited by the elected minority.

You could elect Honest Abe and you'd simply see him post on this board his frustration with the non-elected power base. "Venting" is about as good as it gets.

This is what we do. We get a limited view of something, ascribe reasons to clear to us for what little we have seen, and argue our conclusions as fact endlessly. Football, bot, sammiches, it doesn’t matter. It’s what we do.

Please take this opportunity to argue that all alumni-elected trustees are only concerned with the JoePa statue.

This is true, but the seats are there and those elected - even if in the minority - should speak for the alumni, even if futile. For example - Jay voted against a funding plan, despite probably knowing it would pass, for investment in football facilities because he, and many other alums, believed much of the funding was being misdirected or the ways to pay for it were not ideal. I don't like when they rubber stamp something just because they know they can't really change or stop anything. Barry's problem is he's a bit too caustic and rough around the edges - he has good points and should be able to have them raised, responded to, and on record, when these votes occur.

Well, I was thinking Alumni-elected, but now I'll include most of the full board. When almost every important decision is made, for a Public Institution by a small group (Executive Committee) behind closed doors, and gets unanimous approval when put to a vote, than yes, I'd call that status quo. It would probably be much easier to break out the few issues that weren't status quo.

The Alumni Elected BOT is the equivalent to the Chinese Peasants' and Workers' Democratic Party (CPWDP) in China. Legally representative and allowed, but 100% under the control of the remaining BOT, as the CPWDP is beholden to the Chinese Communistic Party (CCP). Give them a few seats and smile. Actually, the CPWDP may get more accomplished than our Alumni Elected Board do. I have also nominated Barry a few years running, but he never gets through the vetting process. So I no longer will participate, as it is a waste of time.

I've said this before. Would Barry be able to effect change? Almost certainly not. But there comes a time when you simply need a bomb-thrower and that time has passed. If Barry is nothing else, he's a bomb-thrower.

Several years ago I probably would have agreed with you about Barry, but not anymore. Just look at his website and you'll see that he's knows many of the issues has some clear thoughts on the direction he'd like to see the University take in the future. He's putting in a lot of effort tracking and reporting on the issues...it seems like he puts in more effort than may of the current BOT's. I'd like to see him get a chance to affect change.

Barry is too stupid to realize what it takes to get on the ballot. You don't garner votes by insulting voters but he continues to double down on that approach and seems to be surprised when it doesn't work. Did you follow Barry when he graced this board with his presence in the past? If so, I'm sure you noticed his habit of going back and deleting the majority of his posts. Now that is a man that stands behind what he says, right?

He's had plenty of chances to affect change - he just cannot get beyond his own idiotic behavior.

Be careful. Don't encourage him, Art. He does have a degree in ChemE. He could end up being the McAndrew Board's Kaczynski.

I'll bet you're a real fun guy to have at a reunion and reminiscing times past.

Don't get me wrong, Barry certainly knows his stuff better than anyone currently on the BoT. problem is that the vast majority of them are simply too stupid or entrenched to force a change of direction. He might get a couple of folks to listen, but not many more.
