The MLB record book is full of players who struck out in their only major-league at bat. I myself am more than willing to judge him on his 2nd or 3rd preseason game but he drops another one he'll be stuck on the bench for a long time, if even that. He just has to play better.

I'm sure he knows that. but way to show some classy support.

Yeah, shame on me but I'm just pointing out the obvious. I'm very sorry he lost his friend, of course, and you do have to wonder what kind of effect that did have for him; I'm sure it was considerable, not even considering his probable lack of sleep. But he's got to catch the ball from now on if he wants to stick. If you think that my pointing out this certain truth should have been saved for a different thread, then I apologize.

Everyone deals with grief differently. Anyone remember what Brett Favre did that Monday Night after losing his dad?

Good Lord, get off your high horse. Nobody did anything but point out the objective facts of his performance. Big frickin deal.

Last sentence of yours was very classy though, you seem like you have a lot of room to judge.

you find your corner yet??

This is the NFL not tiddly-winks. He did not have a good game. He is a rookie and talented, hence he will get a second chance with the Steelers. If that doesnt work, he will get another chance with another club. Rookies get a limited chance to make it, and as a pro you have to block external stuff out, because there are 500 or so kids coming into the league next year. Make that Sure-thing TD catch and all else would have been forgotten by the fans (not the coaches.)

If he played in one of the scruff games tonight, nobody would be talking about his performance except PSU fans and the team he played for that got the TV broadcast. Give him some slack for being a rookie, but he needs to make those rookie plays.

I can't wait until one of you loses a close friend or loved one so I can yell at you to go to work the next day and perform, or else go home and play tiddly-winks. f**king sadists

Yeah, none of us have lost loved ones and worked before. You know what I didn't do? Act like everyone should know what's happening in my life and pass judgment on them for not knowing.

Obviously none of us could know what was happening in James' life when we discussed his performance, so what kind of holier-than-thou douchebag judges people for what they said? And even if we were being judged, nobody was being mean-spirited about it, we were simply discussing the objective facts of his performance.

Next time we'll try to be more prescient about players' personal lives when discussing games.... What a joke, get over yourself.

Lots of people here came down hard on a Penn Stater playing in his first game, a pre-season game no less, when they knew first hand that he can and likely will do better. Then upon seeing that said Penn Stater went into the game with a heavy heart in dealing with a very difficult situation, they criticized the guy more.

We get it. James had a bad game. Big deal. It happens, and he would probably be the first one to admit it. Give the guy a break. He's a rookie, it was his first game, and he had a lot on his mind. Veteran athletes have had terrible games without the distraction that James was dealing with.

Go on thinking "whatever". Keep being OUTRAGED by James' performance.

I love the kind, but let's be honest on what we saw at Penn State and how it's going to be in the pros.

Tomlin has handled this very well and supported Jesse. Still, if JJ makes the team, is on the practice squad or gets cut will obviously be on what he does on the field and how they value his potential. I think the Steelers really like his potential so the practice squad is what I would guess at this point.

The nfl is a business and they care about production . It's that simple.

They don't care much about your bad day .

I think every SINGLE one of us wants Jesse James to become the greatest TE in the history of the NFL. But until that happens, he will be criticized (just like very other player) and rightfully so.

Sorry to hear about his loss.

What ever happened to "Win one for the Gipper"?

James had the same problems while he was at Penn State...can't block and has below average hands. Losing his best friend as nothing to do with those issues.

Obviously he can catch. Blocking wasn't his biggest issue in the Vikings game.

Let's not assume what was in his head. His performance could very well have been influenced by the loss of his friend, and he may have also been experiencing first-game jitters. Let's give the kid a break and see how he plays moving forward.

I'll just again say I don't think anyone was being unfair, cruel or mean-spirited in their analysis of James' performance. I'm confident every one of us on here wants him to succeed. All that was discussed last Sunday night were the undeniable facts of his performance. Even if we'd known what he was going through (and nobody possibly could, which is what makes simons' indignation so absurd), the statements that were made still would not have been inappropriate. Nobody was attacking his character or denigrating him, it was simply, "James is having a rough night, here are the plays that evidence that."

Buster Douglas not only beat Mike Tyson for the Heavyweight Title, he knocked him out. Why? For his mom who passed away.
