Long time lurker, 1st time poster. Thought I'd start with a question that's been on my mind for awhile.
Why is Braxton Amos never mentioned as a potential recruiting target for us (PSU), or for anyone else for that matter? Seems like a super sophomore with only seniors and juniors ahead of him in the rankings. Is he a football guy? A die hard Mountaineer? Thought to be a tweener too big for 197 and too small for 285?

I think some posters on Ohio Wrestling think the Buckeyes have a good chance at him. Don't quote me on that, but I think I read that.

First, keep in mind that wrestling is unlike football and basketball, in that recruiting info is hard to come by.

Second, he wrestled 220 lbs. this season, as a HS soph. Next year, when he's a HS junior, Seth Nevills will be redshirting at PSU, and Michael Beard will be grayshirting. As such, when Amos graduates from HS, Seth Nevills will have 3 years of eligibility left, and Beard will have either 3 or 4 years of eligibility left. With that in mind, it doesn't appear that PSU will have much of a need for a 197/285 recruit, and as such, there will be little or no scholarship $$ available for such a recruit.

Third, I haven't heard anything about other universities that are recruiting him, but that's mostly because I haven't really paid much attention, as I didn't see any chance that PSU would be involved due to my second point.

Welcome to the board

Same deal w/ AJ Ferrari. Gonna take Beard or Nevills to bust or have injuries to take on those dudes.

This is exactly the reason NCAA wrestling needs to move into this century and create a weight between 197 and HWT. Really unfair to a large portion of wrestlers that do not have a weight to wrestle. This only further pushes them to other sports like football. Ridiculous IMO that there is not one when HS and International wrestling both do.

With whose money and Title IX compliance?

Or at the expense of which other weight?

Been discussed here forever, ain't happening.

To add a weight between 197 and HWT would require the loss of a another weight. Which weight should be dropped?

Already answered by others. My only response would have been (or, is)...$$$$$$$$$$$.

Not that I'd want to lose 125 for 220 (hell no). But I wonder what the participant numbers are for those weights in high school.

I don't have those numbers, but I do know that when I have examined brackets for various early season college level open tournaments, 197 and HWT are almost always the 2 weight classifications with the fewest participants.

Not by any means a scientific approach, but by using the far more accurate college football playoff standard of excellence "eye test" I have concluded both Ohio State and Alabama are always number one and 125 has more participants than 197 or HWT.

I think it is more likely you have it backwards. The lack of a 220 lb. division doesn't chase those great athletes to football......football greatly reduces the number of good 220 lb. athletes that go into wrestling. Check high school forfeits to see which weights get forfeited the most.

I would widen the weight divisions by 1-2 lbs. i.e. 125, 133,142,151,161,171,183,197, 215, HWT. Why is that such a unreasonable idea to widen weight divisions by at most 1-2 lb in order to include a complete group of wrestlers that get completely shut out?

Because there is no evidence that a complete group of wrestlers get shut out. In fact the evidence is just the opposite. See all of the other responses in this thread. See especially Sportfan2017's response.

why wouldn't we have won. We would have gotten all the same points, plus cassar could have wrestled 215.

You might want to look at that again. We would be missing one of the Fab 5, unless Bo went to 197.

Same thing would have happened to tOSU. Not to mention it's ridiculous to speculate on what MIGHT have happened IF the weights were different. Everything leading up to NCAA starting with who was recruited by various schools to who would be at what weight. Seriously what is the point other than to be obnoxious?

The only thing obnoxious in this thread was your post.

The poster made the point that if we tweaked the weights, we might be able to add a higher weight. The point I was making is although it might seem like a tweak, it could have a much greater impact than one might imagine.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, Your point is moot since everything leading up to NCAAs with new weights would have changed, something I am sure you are well aware of, but chose to ignore. Why did you do that, other than to stir the pot, ala GhostK? Just curious.

Stir the pot? What are you possibly talking about??? it appears as though you have psychological problems...

You still eliminated a middle weight class to add the 215 pound class.

That eliminated weight class has many more participants than the 215 pound class.

Yes.....if you want to find all the great athletes that would make great 215-220 lb. wrestlers.......check out the linebackers playing on Sat. ( or Sun. ) Also.....pass rushing DE......and tight ends.....maybe even a few Strong safeties and QBs

If Braxton Amos would become Mormon and go on a two year mission.....problem solved! Seriously, if there was another weight class between 197 and 285 the teams that are at the head of the food change would probably be the only one's to benefit. It may be more than just money as the top teams (aka PSU) would still have recruits coming in for much less than other programs.

I doubt Penn State would have won NCAA's this season with these weights.
Presumably, these weight classes would be known well ahead of time (like 2 to 3 years), coaches would adjust recruiting to them, and athletes would adjust to them. Trying to "backcast" results, based on new weight classes doesn't have much meaning.
