Football BREAKING: Manny Diaz hired as Penn State's defensive coordinator

Hmm, not sure what to think about this.

He was pretty bad as DC at Texas. Was better at Miami but against weaker schedule.

Hopefully Diaz makes some much needed changes. Implements a flexible scheme allowing us to go into 2022 with an odd front to take maximum advantage of the talent currently on hand, hire a proper linebacker coach and get rid of these co-what ever titles and get down to business of developing talent.

His defenses at MTSU were meh as well, although I didn't mention them in part because I honestly didn't watch much of their defenses. Statistically, his defenses were somewhere in the #60-90 range in scoring defense. I'd be curious to hear thoughts about the extent to which his defenses improved over time, though.

I know Texas fans were not a fan -- those defenses spelled the end for Mack Brown.

Watched Texas a lot back then and I would say it was more the QB situation after Young and MCCoy that did Mack in.

I don't know if that will work...his D has been known to get killed by running teams....now you face 6 top 50 running teams in the Big 10 conference.

He likes to blitz a lot and gets lots of TFL...but 3rd down and red zone D was not good.

Was just reading reactions over on Canes Insight. How much of the rhetoric is legit analysis vs. trashing the guy who is no longer yours?

I ask, because a lot of posters seem to think he's a bad hire for PSU. One person said "payback for Al Golden".

Lots of commentary supporting your point above -- his scheme being a bad fit for the Big Ten. I'd like to hear more why that's the case.

Posters also saying he was an average to above average DC, but not great on developing talent.

Look he's bright, knows football and a very aggressive DC. His D usually get a lot of TFL but we're not good on money downs...3rd down and red zone. Playing a power running team or a running QB was a weakness. I thought he would be a better fit in the PAC-10 or some other conference...not the smash mouth Big-10.

My 2 cents

Looks like his defenses were highly rated at Miami 2016-2018 and I know Misssissippi State liked him. Didn’t go as well at Texas

Great hire in terms of brand and recruiting. He'll need to make adjustments to be effective in the run-heavy B1G and in the upper midwest/mid-atlantic weather.

How do you know he's "bright"?

Not trolling, seriously asking. I couldn't find anything about his time at FSU as a student, etc.

This is as good a hire as you're going to get. I doubt he's going to rush the edge when he knows the B10 loves to exploit the middle of the field, different conferences and different styles of play. Plus, he knows hs coaches/players in FLA.

Man, I know this season has sucked, but this is a really good hire.

At Miami (total defense rankings):

2016: 20th
2017: 38th
2018: 4th

Pretty good on the whole. Should be noted that in 2018, Miami's schedule was probably the weakest it has been in a long time. Highest ranked opponent was #24. They seemed to struggle to close out games in 2018, too. Don't know if those were late game lapses by the defense or poor offense or both.

Miami's defenses have been really bad the past few years, although I don't know how hands-on Diaz was with the defense vs. deferring to his DC. Miami fans should be able to address that.

High energy guy. Not a great offensive guy, couldn’t develop a QB though seemed to have found one this year. Will bring some Miami arrogance, which We need.

Great hire! Young. Lots of DC experience. Knows Florida recruiting and SEC recruiting. Will be with us for a while which we need. Welcome Coach Diaz and family!

How can there possibly be a negative comment on this hire. The name OC last year, now a known DC this year. With Franklin's extension PSU is a destination spot for players and coaches. This all bodes well for the future. The prior DC's teams were highly rated because he had excellent, highly rated players, yet they collapsed late in games to outstanding teams. How many times did you know a 4h quarter two TD lead against OSU was not enough.? Time for a new scheme. I live in FL and Diaz is considered a strong recruiter. Looking forward to signing day and next season.

I also think this is an absolutely fantastic hire. He is a very good defensive mind, and he has the Florida recruiting connections that are so valuable. Franklin has the pieces in place at the coordinators. That running game must be fixed to win the conference again. Rbs need to run instead of dancing and TEs need to finish blocks like Pat F did.

Poindexter and Smith will handle the Red Zone D.

Seems like as solid a hire as we could have hoped. Lots of DC experience, mostly positive results (some very positive), HC experience, ties to South (recruiting).

Yes, let’s avoid the rush and start firing him now. 🙄
