Football BREAKING: Manny Diaz hired as Penn State's defensive coordinator

Not a fan of this hire at all. Obviously time will tell, but this IMO is an “all sizzle, no steak” type of move.

The new Landscape of college football!!! Hopefully does does some great things for PSU for a couple years then earns another HC job. Tom Bradley’s record will never be broken !!!

I also think this is an absolutely fantastic hire. He is a very good defensive mind, and he has the Florida recruiting connections that are so valuable. Franklin has the pieces in place at the coordinators. That running game must be fixed to win the conference again. Rbs need to run instead of dancing and TEs need to finish blocks like Pat F did.
Agree 100%. Big name hire and hopefully, he lives up to the name.

Let's not pre-judge this man. Let's wait and see what happens. I remember when everyone wanted us to get rid of Moorehead, only later to wish he was back. I am confident that he can make the necessary adjustments to Big Ten football. What I am hoping he brings is an aggressive attitude and style of play. My only real concern is recruiting. Poindexter can help with that. Sean Lee would still be a very attractive add.

Diaz is a heckuva a recruiter.

Hmm, not sure what to think about this.

He was pretty bad as DC at Texas. Was better at Miami but against weaker schedule.
Who was your preference?

noboby in particular… just not a manny Diaz fan at all. I think he’s been a below average coach every place hes been and have never understood the hype around him.

He’s up there with Will Muschamp… as guys who get hired and I have no idea why.

I truly hope he does a great job here. I just happen to think he won’t. But like I said earlier , only time will tell

ICYMI, Jaishawn Barham committed to South Carolina today. Earlier today, Barham fooled the recruiting analysts by telling them he would pick Maryland, but then he committed to South Carolina.

Well....everbody has one ....

I think I like the hire, though this has me nervous:
> Diaz was fired one day after Brigham Young rushed for 550 yards, the most ever against Texas, during a 40-21
> victory over the Longhorns.
Fortunately, we aren't in a conference where teams run the ball a lot. I mean look at our rushing offense. Hopefully, he has learned some things about how to stop the run since his time in Texas.

Just a PSU flashback . BYU qb Ty Detmer torched us for over 550 yds through the air. He was leading the Cougars down the field to take the lead in the Holiday Bowl. Fortunately Gary Brown had a pick six . We won. Also remember PSU helping Sanchez become a very rich man after a Rose Bowl tilt . Don’t remember any firings after those games .

lol Gary Brown literally just ripped the ball from Detmer's hands, strip and score rather than pick six, an all time great play

I don't know if that will work...his D has been known to get killed by running teams....now you face 6 top 50 running teams in the Big 10 conference.

He likes to blitz a lot and gets lots of TFL...but 3rd down and red zone D was not good.
Except for this year for the most part ... you could be talking about us.

All defenses have bad days and get ripped occasionally. Not a problem. I just wonder about a guy from ‘The U’ . Don’t like their attitude and hope he doesn’t bring it here. Don’t know enough about him or how he dealt with players. But I must assume that since CJF is very good about academics, responsibility, civics, family, and society .....that discussion was had.

I would be interested to know who those who don't like this hire wanted or thought would be better? Just interested ...
Agreed. DC at 5 different D1 schools, 3 of which were Power 5. Head coach at a Power 5 where he had a winning record. Strong ties to Florida SEC and ACC recruiting areas and still young. Great reputation with his players. Homerun as you could get under the circumstances.

Daiz is a pretty religious guy, maybe part of the reason they gave him the boot is that he wasn’t in agreement with that type of culture. Idk..just throwing that out there.

It’s just an odd response that you’re unhappy with the hire but really had nobody in mind. He’s considered a very good defensive coach. There is currently a lot of competition to hire a quality DC with some major openings right now. At worst he is at the same level as Pry, who I was never completely impressed with. This was a great hire by Franklin in a difficult situation.

Heh, I didn't remember it being that much - it was actually 576 yards, beating Flutie's 520 yards. There's something about giving up a lot of yards on the ground that makes it feel worse than through the air, IMO. Like the time MSU had 2 200-yard rushers against us. Diaz should be a great recruiter. If he can stop the run it will be a great hire.

JFYI

Here's a snapshot of what you get with Diaz. He was very involved with the defense while as head coach and fired his DC last year to take the dual role as DC for this season. A season in which the defense was certainly the weaker side of the ball.

2021
#77 in Total D
#84 in Scoring D
#129 (out of 130) in Red Zone D
#79 in 3rd Down Conversion D
#69 in First Down D
#87 in interceptions
#62 in Pass Eff. D
#115 in Turnovers Gained

Things they did well
#9 in TFL
#35 in Sacks

Manny's defenses are historically very poor against good teams. His D against top 25 teams during his career is not good...12-29.

It was tongue-in-cheek. I was taking a swipe at our offense for our inability to run the ball this year as "evidence" that the Big Ten doesn't now run the ball very much. Yes, I'm aware we have some of the top running teams in the country.
