BSD, By Request -- The Bo Nickal FALL

To quote J Jaggers: Boom!

Still think Bo takes the chin-whizzer off when MyMar goes from the blast-double to focus on the single-leg (drawing it up and toward himself), Bo acts like he was thinking about dropping that arm inside of MyMar's arms as a defense tactic had MyMar been satisfied to focus on the leg, but when MyMar then continued to drive forward, you see Bo realize he is going to the mat so he drops his hips in preparation and immediately inserts his lower-leg and foot into the "elevator position" as he is going down....at the same time and as he is going backward he starts searching for MyMar's head-&-chin as he expects it to be coming forward....which is delayed momentarily as they hit the mat.....but MyMar foolishly comes forward after hitting the mat (originally, MyMar's shoulders hit down around Bo's stomach and waist....it wasn't until MyMar foolishly drove forward looking to drive Bo's shoulders down, that Bo was able to re-engage his head with his foot-leg still in the elevator position....game over).

This is clearly the case and I haven't seen anyone address it yet. It doesn't matter one way or the other because Bo won in spectacular fashion, but everyone is giving Martin credit for taking Bo straight to his back when it's clear to me that Bo "caved" intentionally and was clearly intending to elevate with the cowcatcher, chin wizzer or whatever you'd call it. Bo was setting that up from the time he was still standing, no doubt about it.

I'm picturing the Nickal family enjoying this video clip years from now...sort of the ultimate home movie :)

Notice the fans. One Ohio State fan stands up, then sits down...this is awesome, slow down the video to enjoy it....Another stands up, keeps his hands in victory formation, then slowly drops them. Notice Jaggers, and this is even better...slowly to his knees. Tervel? Head in hands "not this shit again" pose. Ryan? Stands, realizes before any of the fans do, what is going to happen, and sits down and slumps well before even the kick and the elevator happens. How about our "friends" from Cornell? Entire section, as always, rooting against Penn State, stands, then sits the hell down again as they realize it's another PSU victory coming. Talk about envy, when was the last time any of them actually rooted for one of ours? LOL.

As soon as Martin said that he was going to come out and "leave it all on the mat", this was the inevitable conclusion. While I'm not a big fan of Jim Gibbons, he's fond of saying that opponents need to know when to let go of Bo. In this case Martin needed to also know when not to get too greedy.

Completely agree. The most reliable source of info on this move is Bo himself. He explained it mere moments after leaving the mat. It’s almost like he couldn’t believe MyMar was going to make it so easy on him by falling into that trap (easy by Bo standards). That’s why he said he’s been doing that move since he was 6 and how he KNEW MyMar was “going to his back.” (BTW, DT also said immediately after that Bo has nailed everybody in the room with that move.)

MyMar is an exceptional wrestler and under other circumstances may have been able to avoid that move, or at least minimize the damage. But on that stage, under those high-pressure circumstances, the temptation to pounce on what momentarily looked like the path to glory was too great to resist. Meanwhile, Bo was thinking “cue the fat lady.”

With hindsight, Bo wanted MM to do exactly what he did. MM was going to be aggressive and use the blast double. He was ready the first time, knew the was no mat to execute the plan, so he bailed. Bo’s shots were half hearted. The crowd, egging MM on, sealed the deal. He would never admit it, but I bet Bo knew that would be over in a the first.

As a fan but non-wrestler, I was amazed Saturday night. Now it is Monday and I am more amazed.

Only people that know what Bo did are Bo and Wade Schalles.

Bo Nickal=Wade Schalles
Myles Martin=John Chatman

Schalles pin of Chatman passed before my eyes as Bo pinned MyMar. It was deja vu all over again.

Wade's coach was a friend of mine. He also coached Elizabethtown HS before and after he coached Hollidaysburg.

Thanks to our own jto for getting the message to his buds at BSD, and to Ben Scaff for the piece... ENJOY!!

LOL at the one comment there. Cut and pasted below. Not certain if true or not, but a thing of legend to me if true.

Really miss the BSD Podcasts from last year. The guys did an exceptional job, and I have them loaded in my weekly podcast search, but nothing came up this year. I have them right up there with the Flo and teh Trow/Funky, must listen to.

Again, posting from Drea1020 below which I love!!

I was listening to Jeff Byers on Steve Jones' radio show today
and he told the following story (or approximately this story):

Bo was in the locker room before his finals match against Martin and said "I think I’m going to let him take me down a few times in the first and second period. Then he’ll be tired out by the third period and I’ll pin him"

Cael, without looking up, "Let’s find another plan".

Byers said that Bo was of course joking, but was highlighting the looseness and fun that the PSU wrestling team exudes.

Schalles also pulled the exact same thing that Bo did in the first round of the 1972 NCAAs. His opponent attacked almost immediately and hit a perfect high crotch and tried to drive Schalles backwards to the mat. Schalles dropped backwards and hit the elevator and took the guy right over to his back. If you look at the 150 lb brackets for the 1972 NCAAs, you'll see that Schalles got a pin in about 40 seconds in the first round. The reaction of the other coach was really comical. He gave his wrestler the both palms up sign, meaning he didn't have any answer for what had just happened.

I'll be using the 'that's what we do' saying for all eternity....or infinity if you will. :)

Well, to be fair the alternative was for Myles to wrestle the same match he wrestled at the dual and at B1Gs. He wasn't winning by doing the same things. This was the alternative to another methodical beating by Bo. I don't blame him for trying something different, because the conservative approach wasn't going to get him a different result.

It is always more fun when they man up and try wrestling Bo.

I may just respond to this post daily for the next week or so, just to keep the video easily accessible for a while. ;)

I posted about this last year after talking with Bo at the wrestling banquet about his 2017 quarterfinal match with TJ Dudley of Nebraska. If you recall in the match, Bo started out the second period in the top position with a lead and gave up what appeared to be an uncharacteristic easy reversal. In the next sequence Bo is sitting on the mat with Dudley sitting behind him and almost instantly Bo somehow locks Dudley up in a cradle and it was lights out! I asked Bo if he gave up the reversal in order to set Dudley up for the cradle and he smiled and said yes.
I think Bo is definitely one of the most dangerous counter wrestlers that college wrestling has seen in the last 10 years. Last years championship bout with Gabe Dean proved that point when Dean wanted nothing to do with Bo on the bottom and cut him immediately.

If someone knows how to post the 2017 quarterfinal match with TJ Dudley, I would love to watch it again. A big thank you in advance to someone who can post it!
