Buccigross says...

I don't follow college hockey but glad PSU is going well

But I flipped the dial yesterday and Arizona State playing OSU. Is ASU a hockey dynasty of some sort? Are other teams from the south also good? Kinda surprised by it.

Buccigross better be careful or he could wind up part of the next round of espn "cuts". Probably enough money left to re-hire olberman though.

ASU is a new program that is modeling itself after PSU (sans the beautiful facility). They're competitive enough to tie Tosu, so they're competitive. Good for them. There are no other teams in the south.

ASU was one of the top tier "club programs" (IIRC), during the era when PSU was dominating the club hockey scene

Just recently moved up to "D1" hockey

We played a home series with them this season, I was at one of the games. They reminded me a lot of PSU our first year in D1; they had a few good players but on balance were just a step slower than we were. That's what our guys looked like back in the beginning so they won't win many games this year but as we've seen that can change pretty quickly.

We were tied w/ them in the one game pretty late, if I remember correctly.

The issue ASU has is that there aren't too many good hockey players down that way. They are probably hoping they can get the best California kids, but their program is going to require a lot of travel.

A family friend, a few years younger than me from West Chester County, NY went to ASU back in the'80's to play on their club team. He considered PSU to play for the Icers, but couldn't resist the Arizona weather. So, they do have that going for them.

There is one more, University of Alabama Huntsville, a member of the WCHA.

My nephew plays for a AAA youth hockey team that was started and coached by Alabama-Huntsville hockey alumni. They actually have two teams - one that covers the Kentucky/sounthern Ohio/Indiana region and another that draws its players from further south.

Especially when they start recruiting that "northern speed!"

The Arizona Coyotes announced last month that they were building a new arena over in the Tempe area and that ASU would also play in that building so they'll be getting that hockey arena in a few years.

Only if you consider northern Alabama, i.e. Huntsville, not in the South ;)

When I made that statement, I said to myself both Lar and Art will correct me. As usual (except in the statement itself of course), I was correct.

ASU just started its varsity program, ala PSU a few years ago. Mario Lemieux's son Austin recently signed with them out of major junior hockey.

True, with the exception of one Austin Matthews....

Ok if this is the extent of it, does anyone here attend all or most home games?
Yes. Season ticket holder. I make the trek up from Pittsburgh for virtually all the games.

We have some good discussion in the Den. New BWI Intern @David Eckert-BWI Staff just started doing in-game updates. There are regular Den members who are puckheads and season-ticket holders, but don't see them too much on the McAndrew Board.

The McAndrew Board is like an exclusive country club. You have to know somebody to get in.

Harvard was #3 last week. They dropped right out of Buccigross' Top Ten.
Buccigross is a great advocate for college hockey and has been very positive voice for Penn St. ASU doesn't have the facility/location/conference advantages the Penn St had when starting a program. They are well funded and should develop program quickly, but this year's team is terrible. Harvard dropped to #10 in PWR. Bucci is nice and polls are nice, but PWR is the NCAA tournament field and it updates after every game. There will be a change tonight when BC plays BU. Penn St won't be impacted. It's a good system. BIG is having another down year, which will hurt Penn St. If they keep winning they will certainly qualify for NCAAs and should be a high seed, but the season is just starting.
