Howard has looked solid. He’s so quick. Almost RBY quick. He seems to use more go behinds while RBY hits more re-attacks but they are both extremely effective. I don’t like that he backs up a bit and ends up in the zone a lot where he gives up some step outs. Both matches were fairly close in score but he controlled both pretty much the entire time.

Poulin looked great. His quarterfinal was close but he controlled it as well. Gave up a 4 on the edge and a takedown with 5 sec left to make the score close.

Ulrey looked great in his second match but got schooled by a Russian in the quarterfinals. Can tell he hasn’t wrestled a lot of freestyle. He got gutted 3 times in a row by the Russian. His lefty hi-c was working great his first 2 matches but in the 3rd he got countered twice off it for takedowns. Love watching him wrestle however. Kid gets after it.

I missed Sokol’s first match but his second match he got teched in under a minute. Seemed to just get caught in a couple positions and it was over. Really wish it would have went a bit longer because I think he would have settled in and it would have been a better match.

Catka didn’t look very good at all I thought. He was taking shots from way outside with no setup. He was winning and gave up 2 takedowns off his own sloppy shot.

Not a great first session but I would think Ulrey will get pulled back in by the Russian. I will be surprised if both Howard and Stevo don’t make the finals. I’m not sure if Catka and Sokol have a chance to be pulled back in. Didn’t look at their brackets after they lost. If USA ends this first half with 3 medals and 2 in the finals it’s pretty good but I think they were expecting a little bit more. The next half should do well also. Richie Figs, Facundo, Haas, Mendez, and McGowan. That’s a really solid group.

The Trackwrestling website is from 1996.
Looks fine on my screen.

Went and looked at the brackets at the end of the session. Catka is out. Sokol and Ulrey still have a chance to get pulled back in. Poulin’s semi is actually very tough. Has the Iranian who was the cadet world champ last year at the lowest weight (45 kg maybe). Howard also has an Iranian. Kid is also in his 3rd cadet worlds and placed I think 7th and 5th. I watched one of his matches and I feel like Howard is definitely better. Kid sits in a square stance and handfights. If Robbie gets his motion and fakes going I don’t think the Iranian can slow him down. Should be fun.

The end of Robbie Howard's QF match got a little chippy, with Rasim (BUL) needing yolo points, Howard slipping in a half and going for a pin with time winding down. Then time ran and Rasim deliberately elbowed Howard in the head. It's a good sign that Howard declined to escalate at that point.

Gotta love that Zain/Frank mean streak on top.

re: catka

he was clearly outsized against his opponent and got a passivity warning pretty early which somewhat explains the sloppy shots from the outside.

I gotta ask--how'd you pull this off? Special theme for firefox or something? :D

My favorite part of the clip w/ the bulgarian is the end--Bulgarian trying to get eye contact to keep the heat going, and Robbie looks straight ahead and seems to say (with those mythical non-verbal signals), "watch this, you're gonna really hate this part" and gets his had raised.

Thanks for the vid, tikk.

In the absence of pretty clear NCAA rules around Technical Violations, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, and Flagrant Misconduct, we have the "comparable" rules from UWW Wrestling;

Article 49 – General Prohibitions
Wrestlers are forbidden to:

- Pull the hair, ears, genitals, pinch the skin, bite, twist fingers or toes, etc. and generally, to perform
actions, gestures or holds with the intention of torturing the opponent or making him suffer to force him to withdraw.
- Kick, head-butt, strangle, push, apply holds that may endanger the opponent’s life or cause a fracture or dislocation of limbs, tread on the feet of the opponent or touch his face between the eyebrows and the line of the mouth.
- Thrust the elbow or knee into the opponent's abdomen or stomach, carry out any twisting action which
is likely to cause suffering, or hold the opponent by his singlet.
- Cling to or grasp the mat.
- Talk during the bout.
- Seize the sole of the opponent’s foot (only seizing the upper part of the foot or the heel is permitted).
- Agree with the match result between themselves.

Can't find elbows to the head...still looking :(.

I usually have Photoshop open for some reason or other, so it was just a few minutes of copy-pasting and tweaking.

UWW Database time!

Howard's Iranian semifinal opponent (Veisi) is also a 3-time Cadet World representative who has yet to medal (5th, 7th).

On the bottom side:
Aman- Beat Russia in round 1; 2019 Asian Champ (ahead of Veisi, bronze); 2018 Cadet World bronze (51Kg)

Edit: woops, this guy lost to Jalolov in QF.

Jalolov- 2018 youth Olympic champ (48kg); 2017 and 2018 Asian Champ (42Kg, 48Kg); 2017 Cadet World silver (42kg)

Short bios of guys Howard had to go through:

Rasim's best result on the UWW database is bronze at Euro Cadets in 2018

Harutyunyan was 5th at last year's Cadet Worlds (55kg).

I guess Howard lost 8-6. Didn't watch. Looked like Howard may have scored 2 at the buzzer, but he needed a 4.

My guess is he will get Japan for bronze.

Between his tweets and actions thus far Howard is going to be the next villain in college wrestling. I like it. Definitely going to give us some entertainment!

This x1000000.

4 year starter Cassar would have had the potential to grow into one.
It also works against him that his major competition is a legitimate heel. Hard to be the heel when everyone dislikes your opponents even more.

My initial sense of the post-match proceedings was that Howard was on his toes, wary, eyes-darting and not knowing what might come next, because Rasim still looked pissed and might just lunge at him. And then the ref bungled the hand-raising, causing them to nearly trip over each other, keeping everyone even more off balance.

Not a great day so far for team USA. McGowan has made the semis, but everyone else is hoping to get pulled back in (Ulrey’s tourney is done).

Anyone know when the medal matches are?

semifinals from today's starters should begin any minute, then finals from yesterday's wrestlers should follow

Dang. At least McGowan made the finals. Only one medal is not quite what we’ve been used to in recent years though. Wrestling is hard.

Willie has a take

Facundo made the bronze medal match—my bad on missing his opportunity to do so. He’s gonna be a stud for some school—prolly FleshFowl, but kinda hoping for us.
