I pulled a wrestling tee shirt out of my drawer today that was a celebration of a century of excellence. It is from 2008. On the back it listed all of Penn State's individual national champions during our first century of wrestling. There are 17 for a total of 20 championships. Cael has added another 18 individual champions with 38 championships between them. I have tried in vain to find the most number of national champions by one coach. I would bet on Gable.

Iowa has had 55 wrestlers win at least one championship to our 35, but we are closing fast.

By my count, Dan Gable had 29 wrestlers win 46 titles. These total could be off a little. Mathing is hard.

It's an amazing run. Enjoy it.

(Please correct me if I am off on my totals - as if I have to ask.)

Roar: I’ve got the same t-shirt and had the same reaction when I came across it this fall.

Updated to include championships stats. Sorted by total AA's.

As a reminder the % of bracket to AA reflects the fact that the number of AA's per weight has fluctuated over the years. And the total AA During Tenure reflects that the number of weights also varied over the years.

One more way Cael Sanderson is the greatest coach among greatest coaches.

While his AA's per season trails Gable's, he leads all comers in average finish per AA.

I think that we need to broaden this discussion to the Greatest Coaches of All-Time, and take the wrestling out of it entirely. Who else is in this conversation? John Wooden, Vine Lombardi, Geno Auriemma…
