Can any of you baseball fans in the Altoona area tell me why Bell is not

in triple A. It looks like he has a sweet swing. Is it his defense? Is it because he is learning 1st base?

It's because he's still learning to hit. As a switch hitter each side sees fewer at bats than a regular hitter, so it takes longer. It really is better to have extra at bats than too few before moving up or you can permanently screw up a swing. If you notice, his power is still down. Its because he really is working on that swing. With his potential better to get it right than rush it.

Saw Altoona in Trenton last week. Twice he came up with 1st and 2nd and none out. They had him bunt each time and he did 3 fouls each time. Clearly they are in teaching mode with him.

Good input, thank you.

While they're still working on his hitting, he'd likely be promoted by now if it were solely based on that. He's learning a new position at 1B and has had a few struggles along the way, so they're taking their time getting him comfortable there before promoting him. As Kevin Young recently said while working with Bell: “I think the first half of the season is getting accustomed to the position with being able to see things coming at him,” Young said. “The next part for Josh is execution of plays, seeing if he can maintain and do things on his own and if he can manage his fielding techniques on certain balls in different situations. There are a lot of things that come at you at first base. It’s a lot easier to transition when you are an infielder already, rather than trying to make the move from the outfield.”

Another good input and thank you! Also, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette has an article this AM that helps.

A lot of people think playing first base is easy. It's not, especially in Pittsburgh with the shifting that they do. I look for Bell to be promoted to Indy sometime this year. If he continues to progress then he should be in Pittsburgh by July next year.
