Captain James T Kirk in space

Aka William Shatner is to blast off within the hour on a Blue Origins rocket for a suborbital grip to space. He as much as than any other living person deserves to visit space. The Star Trek series, both tv and movies, inspired untold millions with the dream of space travel.

Safe travels Captain Kirk! 🚀
I really don't understand the current fascination of 2021's version of "space travel" with these guys. The most technologically advanced feat accomplished since the creation of man was safely sending and returning men to the moon 50 years ago.

So, why I am supposed to be impressed by a couple of multi billionaires sending themselves and a couple of friends up 300,000+ feet in altitude and coming straight back down, not even making one orbit of the earth? A big yawn from me.

I agree with your thoughts on these sub orbital flights. Were I a gazillionaire with mullah to waste I would only do a full orbital flight. The true joy is watching the entire planet pass by, looking at the continents, the oceans, and great cities below. These suborbital flights aren’t that impressive.

However, given that Shatner is 90 years old it is pretty amazing that he is capable of such flights. Good for him to be that healthy but also a good sign that space flight is safe enough for older people.

Also, this is just a step on the way. Blue Origion is working on orbital flights and they should be available soon. And the cost should drop substantially in five to ten years.

I agree with your general sentiment but diverge in that I believe commercial human space flight is an important development. No longer is human space flight exclusively government funded.

I don't care who's in that capsule. But seeing the boosters return to earth upright with complete ease is just fascinating.

Didn’t look all that easy. When the engine fired the whole ship wobbled quite a bit. And as it neared touchdown it wobbled again. Wondered if it was going to crash. The control systems must be pretty robust. Amazing landing.

and Shatner’s dialogue was great. Very emotional and a unique perspective. Excellent.

Nail on the head. The impressive part is that shatner is old as hell. I’m almost 40 and my earliest memories of him are in his late 50’s doing rescue 911. The guy is a beast - suborbital or not.

I'm not a science fiction guy and won't watch 5 minutes of a Star Trek episode, but something about Shatner makes me like him. He comes across as honest and inquisitive. Good for him. He also has always had a sense of humor - which most of hollywood lacks these days.

What was just another day for him would be a career making performance for someone today.
Hey MtNittany, did you get screwed out of your handle on "the new board"? You may be able to get it after all. The guy who took it was a noob and came forward after realizing what he had done. There's a thread about it on that site. You may be able to get it if you contact their tech guy.

Apologies to all for hijacking the thread everyone. You can now go back to Captain Kirk.
