Carl Nassib sticks to a monthly budget of $3500. Saves 85% of his income article.

Great article about living within your means, but try living in the NJ/NYC area for $3500 month...

A two bedroom apartment rents more than that...

And, Tom Brady spends "50 Million" on a Gulf Stream Jet!

He has the money so why not spend it with a ton left over. I think his wife is worth something like 350 Million.

Something like 75% of NFL players declare personal bankruptcy w/in 5 years of their playing careers ending. They just burn through cash. Carl N. won't have those players. Even with a modest return on his investments, he should be financially set for life when his career is over.

“He was fine financially. He earned $1.6 million over his first 3 years in the league while driving a Nissan Versa and living with a roommate. His biggest expenses were math books and coffee. He estimates that he lived on less than $25,000 a year.”

Oh, that’s not Nassib. That’s Urschel. Is there a theme here?

My rent is over 3500 when you include parking. Need to move.
Thats over $42,000/yr. You could buy a decent home in W Pa for about two years of rent.

Lots of retired people are now selling homes on the west coast for well over a million and buying comparable homes for $250,000 and pocketing the rest.

Of course 'comparable' doesn't mean weather and scenery. Nor does it mean the same high COL with much lower energy, food, taxes....just about everything else is much cheaper here.

$250,000 buys about 750 sq feet in downtown Chicago. Sold my 715 sq foot condo for 285 a few years ago.

'll be buying at the end of my lease, but my wife has certain expectations with regards to neighborhood, amenities etc, so the mortgage payment is still going to be sitting around 3k a month

Wasn't John Urschel doing something similar? I seem to recall an article about him being in the NFL and still driving his little Nissan. And of course, Saquon isn't touching his salary and instead just living off of endorsements, which I'm sure are substantial.

Gronk saved everything and lived off endorsements as well. Popular mindset these days.

Haha. That comment make me remember the comment my dad made when I first moved from SWPA to MD. Bought a 2 level condo around 1000 sq ft for 85K in 2001. My mom and dad drove down to help me unpack and such. WHen my dad walked in he looked all around the place not saying a word. When he came back downstairs to where I was he said, "you paid how much for this piece of shit?" I told him the price, and he then said to my mom, "get in the car, we're going home" LOL.

LOL! Move to California. Although, everything is expensive here, there's no way I'm moving back to the Main Line or surroundings.

The funny part is, today,t is probably worth more than your parents house is SWPA..or I should say, has appreciated far more than your parents house in PA.

worked with a guy who played 9 years in NFL. was a big name in SEC football the way back. Played in a super bowl. By 3 years out of football he was dead broke and in serious debt. he eventually got his life together and lived decent middle class life, with a white collar job. But all the money he made in playing was gone, gone, gone. So its really good to see people mind set changing.

It's frustrating to see such financial opportunities be squandered by so many athletes. I dream of such opportunities, because it would mean a short-term career followed by a life of doing whatever jobs, volunteer work and hobbies I want to do without having to worry about finances. These guys really don't know what they've got until it's gone. What many of us wouldn't give to earn enough money to be semi-retired at 25 years old.
