...In the early 80's Roy Carver approached Iowa State and offered to build a new arena with the request that Dan Gable be named the new head coach...
... Iowa State said thanks, but no thanks...
...upset, he turned to Iowa, who opened their arms wide to the proposition, hired Gable away from Iowa State ( Dan's alma mater) and accepted $9.2 million to pay for "Carver-Hawkeye " Arena...
...while he was alive he sat on the bench of the wrestling team with Dan and even transported the team to away meets in his private plane!...
...I don't remember any violent reaction to his "buying" a wrestling program for Iowa back then...
...oh, well... :)

Stopped reading when you intimated that Dan Gable started working at Iowa in the early 80s.

...esrly 70's ... OK?...
...the deal was as stated ... I don't think the arena was actually opened until early to mid'80s ...
... Carver died in 1981, before the arena was opened ...
...and I learned he was a graduate of the University of Illinois...
...Gable was hired in 1972 as Kurdelmeier's assistant and became head coach in 1977...so Carver's funding began early '70's...
