Cassar documentary on BTN tonight

Wait….I thought BTN only catered to the Hawkeyes. This can’t be true.

These mods, and their "literal" thread title requirements... I liked mine:

In which the Lions can pick their teeth clean after the hawk snack tonight.

Why would they waste time covering someone from Penn State actually winning a title against one of the best Hwts of all time? ;)

I kid you not, the description on Youtube TV is:
Anthony Cassar Takes Down Gable Steveson…Twice

The documentary was good. I was surprised no PSU coach was interviewed. Would of loved to hear a coach speak about the Shakur decision and also his decision to go to heavyweight.
I was at ESU Open when he got whooped on pretty good from a kid from Penn (7-0??). He was a redshirt unattached freshman. Couldn't get out from bottom.
Unbelievable what he accomplished.

No one currently affiliated with Penn state in it. Byers, Mark Hall, Anthony , his dad , and wife.

I loved the foreshadowing. Didn’t realize his thing in high school too was going for it in the last 15-10 seconds of a period. He did it during that magical season and being in the stands for the finals just felt like it was coming then bang. It was an unbelievable way for the finals to get rolling. That year they started at heavyweight. Cinderella story

I never heard the financial hardship part of his freshman year before. Maybe we should have know since later he could never afford a shirt ;-)

Classic Rocky story. What’s disappointing is that due to injury we all were cheated of the 2019 dual and the budding rivalry between Cassar and Steveson. That would have been even better theatre. PSU heavies were never intimidated by Gable. Kerk always wrestled him tough, too. Second thought PSU wrestlers aren’t intimidated by anyone. Ask Vespo!

Incredible story, having watched it live, a great job capturing the moments. Anthony is a REALLY likable guy, very articulate. Great advert for Cael and company!

Great story and documentary. That was a very special season and young man! I do agree it could have been better. As you said, I was really surprised no coaches were interviewed, and no Shakur? Could have been really interesting to have Gable chime in, or his coaches, but maybe too painful of a loss.

PS: After I posted this, I noticed someone pointed out that Coach Cunningham's was interviewed. I missed that. I'll have to watch again.

I really enjoyed it. Two things stood out for me. First was Anthony’s dad describing how crushing it was for the Caesar family when the coaches decided to start Shak at 197 in the postseason. And his girlfriend (now wife) describing how agonizing it was watching Anthony’s B10 final against Gable on her phone because she had to work. Really well done.

I was hoping Cassar would be chosen over Shak at the time. Love Shak but was too inconsistent.

Shak had an almost 70% bonus rate to Cassar’s under 30%. I’m sure that was a big part of the decision. Tough call, but in hindsight I’m guessing Cassar would have placed higher and scored more team points. Shak did have three majors though at NCAAs that year. And at the Scuffle, Shak pinned (in 0:46) the guy Cassar lost to. Hard to blame the coaches on the decision.

Besides Cassar, how many guys took down Gable?
Kerk got a takedown in the 3rd period of their match at 2021 NCAAs.

Mason Parris got one in garbage time of their 2020 B10 finals. Parris took Steveson from neutral knees to flat on his back at the end of the first and probably would've pinned him, but the takedown came after the buzzer.

One other low-likelihood possibility: Steveson beat Jordan Wood 9-4 in their 2019 dual. The Track scoresheet has scoring data for every match except HWT. Most likely Wood's points were all escapes, but I can't verify either way.

That's it.

EDIT: as pointed out below, Davison scored the opening takedown in their quarters match at 2022 nationals.

Something it missed out on was how decision was made to go to HWT and the ensuing competition with Nevills.

I don't think he just went and said well, if I can't beat Rasheed for 197, I sure as hell won't beat Nickal, so I'm going to just surprise the hell out of everybody without tell coaching staff and show up as an around 225-230 pound HWT and beat out a guy that AA'd the last two years and was 3rd in B10 2X and 5th and 7th in the NCAA's.

BTW, Nick looks like he lost a lot of weight working for Milwaukee Tool.
