CDT article - Q&A with Kerry McCoy

What Kerry doesn't mention is that he lost so many matches as a freshman because he had to cut to 197. Once he wrestled heavyweight, he was nearly unstoppable.

One of my all-time favorite PSU wrestlers. He would fit right in with our current team! It was a crushing day when he lost in the NCAA semis his junior year but he bounced right back and never lost another college match. Go Kerry!

2 things Beckman conveniently omitted: (1) conference placement; (2) Maryland joining B10 for the 2015 season. Joining B10 was a similarly crushing blow to PSU Hoops. (One might also ask Beckman if he would've gone to Maryland if his head coach had stayed there.)

Program definitely took a hit switching conferences, having athletes who could qualify out of ACCs but not out of B10s ... and then the spiral effect of athletes not wanting to go where they can't qualify for nationals.

That said, program might have been declining some anyway, and ACC life would've been tougher with VT and NC State emergence. Maryland is probably the single worst in-state talent pool in the B10, i.e. hardest to attract both starters and depth. Also some clown is the face of the program, less so the head coach

Back to the interview: surprised at no question about Kerry's recent the Alumni Association honor. Also found the question about his post-coaching plans to be ridiculously insensitive, at least could've been worded much better, though he handled it with class.

One question that has to be asked is what level of support does the Maryland wrestling program receive from the Maryland athletic department. Is it fully funded?

Qualifiers I understand going down when moving to the Big Ten. But you would figure that AA caliber athletes would still qualify for NCAA's and AA's are way down too over the past 6 years.
