CFJ wears wig in support of Sutherland on team flight home! Cool stuff!!

Who knows. But I'm pretty sure I know where it came from and what it means to most (probably not all) doing it. Kinda nice to flip somebody a poorly-camouflaged bird and have them think you’re cool for it.

V for victory. ;)
It's the victory sign when your knuckles are facing you. It's an obscene gesture when your knuckles are facing away from you

At least that's what my Brit coworkers tell me....

The stereotype will be especially effective with kids who are not from PA and view its citizens as a group of backward people who cling to their guns and Bibles

Not to worry, that stereotype was cemented during the 2012 presidential campaign and yet he still managed to carry PA! So I wouldn't worry too much about it turning away prospective recruits. :D

Because today everybody is offended by everything and its almost like you have to be publicly offended. I would not be surprised if out of the public eye that the team had a lot of fun poking fun at Dave. Other than Shelton sharing the letter on twitter, the media seemed to make a bigger deal out of it than the players, almost forcing everybody to respond.

Agree 100%.

Ask Mike Mauti if he and the other guys on his team got any comments about long hair and facial hair.

To get butt hurt over a private letter sent to you, and signed no less, is making the proverbial mountain out of a mole hill.

In today's world of outrage and snowflakes I guess even football players are not immune.

I still don't see why they let one guy trigger them. It's like they are looking for an excuse to be offended. I would say 99% of fans realize that crew cuts and skinny ties are not part of today's culture. Letting some tool trigger you just seems weak to me.
Who has been "triggered?" To me, that implies P Ofed. It is just fun to play this pete guy, since he made himself such an easy target, might as well oblige him!

Wikipedia agrees with you (us). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_sign CJF's knuckles are facing away from him.

Yup. V. For Victory.

He'll say the right thing and I respect that. And it's more than plausible deniability since so many do it. They're a bunch of FIGHTERS.

Not sure who was MVP but it should have been Ray Isom. I am not sure which Miami player had warned the receivers they better be ready because Penn St will hit you hard but there was a quote out there
.
The MVP should have been the entire D collectively, which played one of the great games in history against an offense studded with future NFL players and first-round picks.

Re Isom, Michael Irvin walked up to him on the field before the game, took a look at his 5'9" frame, and sneered: Maaan! Then walked away in disdain. The message was: Is this the best you got, Penn State?

Then the game started, and Michael Irvin got hit so hard on thrown balls that pretty soon he stopped reaching for them.

After the game, Shane Conlan told the story and added, yeah, Michael Irvin wasn't impressed before the game because he'd never been hit by Ray. After the game, Irvin didn't have a lot to say.

Sorry, I digress but can't help myself. That game remains such a wonderful memory. Rarely in the history of sports has there been such a storybook example of the underdog Good Guys beating the Bad Guys.

As for JF, I thought the shot of him in dreads was hilarious. He's handled all this perfectly and arguably has even managed to turn the whole silly thing into a plus. And as I pointed out last week, the nice thing is he's done it without any name-calling or attempts to turn a dumb letter from a cranky old man into some sort of existential scandal.

CJF has great instincts about how to relate to college kids. That is one reason he is a great recruiter. Just compare CJF to the dour humorless Narduzzi at pitt. Narduzzi is a arrogant pri-k with no idea how to relate to college aged kids. That is one reason why he gets mostly MAC level recruits.
My favorite is still when he sent Keegan Michael Key in to the PSU team meeting to do an impersonation.

Exactly, Isom whacked some folks that night but Bruno helped prevent miami from having better field position.

Franklin wearing the wig is great PR. It shows he has a personality and is a players coach. Also he is a progressive thinker not stuck in 1960. He is sincere about it too. Compare him to Dantonio or Crist or Ferentz, no contest as those guys have no charisma. Dantonio is just a total grouch, who could like that guy? Harbaugh lives off his NFL glory days. So far Ryan Day seems to be the real deal.

It came from, if I recall, when England was at war with the french, they would cut off the two fingers, (index and middle) from the archers if they captured them.
That way they could no longer fire an arrow. The english would do the two fingers to mock their army showing they have theirs.

Either way, James was doing V for victory.

reverse it actually.....the English longbowmen would show the French that they still had their fingers....the French would cut them off if they captured any of the English

IDK man, maybe if someone sent you a personal letter that said something about the way you looked was disgusting you might feel different. Try to have a modicum of empathy and you might understand.

The guy who sent the letter - what a moron.

What kind of loser is sitting at home noticing dreadlocks, getting mad about them, and then actually taking the time to write a letter - to a 20- or 21-year old?

If someone took the time to be that pathetic I wouldn't be concerned. It's not like the older generation always likes the styles of the younger generations.

A modicum of empathy? You make me laugh. You think no one ever gave anyone crap about their hair style or how they dressed before? Sticks and stones, snowflake, sticks and stones. Hopefully you don't breed.

Yep, PSU fans were more than happy to talk about our old school style and conservative appearance up to and following the Fiesta bowl win in 1987.
But things change and currently Coach Franklin allows things Joe did not. And it's 33 years later from that season. No one on the team was alive along with I'm guessing a few coaches.

Well, if one old geezer is "the World". I think everyone, including the team, is giving one guy WAY too much credit.
I don’t think that’s the point. The point is you can use something like this to build a cohesiveness within a team. James Franklin seems to be really good at turning negative situations into something positive and productive.
