Figured I'd start a separate thread about one of the most under appreciated players on the team.

If you look at all the staff's moves on the o-line this Spring, they all appear to be based on Wright getting the starting RT job and not competing it. This seems to go against a lot of message board chatter that Fries, Mahon, or possibly Nelson are going to win the job.

For a 6'7 350lbs guy, the worst possible matchup is going against a pure speed rusher like Shaka Toney. However, I didn't think Toney looked too fast for Wright to handle. He did a great job of keeping his hands on Toney and extending the pocket for Trace/Tommy to step into. Only recall one play where Toney beat Wright to the inside to stop a 4th & short run.

It seems like Wright just keeps getting better and better at PSU. He may not be a super athlete, but at his enormous size he'll be on an NFL radar down the road.

I think you are Wright about your observations.

you are probably correct (or right or Wright) about your assessment, the other pieces seem to get plugged in as OG (Nelson and Mahon, etc ) and keeping the OT Wright and Bates. That all said, why no love for Zach Simpson, pretty sure he played the whole scrimmage for Blue at right OG. I didn't watch much of the 4th qtr so he could have been replaced.

Thanks for starting the thread. He may in fact be a super athlete. Anybody who can move like that at that size ... You don't see a lot of 345-pound tackles because .... well the laws of physics and all.

You have to wonder -- would PSU have even tried him at tackle if they hadn't lost Nelson/Palmer/Mahon toward the end of the season? But Wright really proved he could do the job in pass protection. He's only going to be better this fall.

Exciting times.

Good point. Per Steve Jones on his B/W radio broadcast, Toney runs a 4.5.

Any 350lbs person who can keep up with that speed, probably is a great athlete.

Wright is a pleasant surprise. I'm not sure he is better than a healthy Nelson, but we haven't seen a healthy Nelson in awhile. I fear that his knees just aren't going to hold up.

Sleeper.

I always thought he was an OT, and that the reason he was inside to start last year was, we had the most questions inside. IIRC Dowrey started the yr at OG, and I think they were always trying to upgrade from him. Bates the same thing, turns out Bates is pretty good, but we didn't know that last September.

Wright has become what we all had hoped that Sterling Jenkins could become....a giant of a man who uses his size and strength to become potentially an All big 10 type OT. Wright has improved to the point where you could imagine that Wright could get drafted into the NFL.

Great strength training, OL development and Offensive Play Calling to put the players into a position where they can succeed.

Way to go Chasz you were given an opportunity and you have taken advantage of it.

Every so often there's an OL who was either written off or never expected to make much of a contribution who ends up becoming a real gem : Mike Lucian, John Urschel, of course, and now Chasz Wright come to mind.
I guess it shows why OL talent may be the hardest to assess in the recruiting process.

I was about to write exactly what you did, Soupy, when I saw your post. Two years ago I really expected that Jenkins would be the starting OT this year. I was one of the most sought after players in the WPIAL in 2015. Looks like Wright has taken his spot.

Not sure why we're using the past tense for Jenkins - Wright has definitely had the light come on, but he's also nearly two years older than Jenkins and has had one more full year in the program. Keep in mind, last year at around this time the staff wasn't sure if Wright would ever be a contributor at Penn State, and look at where he's at now. I'd be very hesitant about doing the same to Jenkins.

The kid has some fluidity for his size, he manages to get that big body in front of people, good body control for a man of his size. Not sure he's a brawler yet but he's been a very pleasant surprise. I would definitely agree, he's made the most of his opportunity!

Chasz Wright's nickname is "BIG BACON."

Wright is a RS sophmore and Jenkins is a RS freshman. A year can make a big difference.

You're a year behind. Wright is a redshirt junior and Jenkins is a redshirt sophomore - but Wright spent a year at a prep school before enrolling early at Penn State, so he's about two years older than Jenkins in age.

Mahon wasn't going to practice much this spring. Nelson not at all and with a torn knee ligament, probably won't even be full contact at all for the first few weeks of fall camp and would be lucky to be ready to even play in a game by October. JFF and staff want to see what Menet gives them at guard and Wright at tackle (and Gonzo at the other guard). So you put the two of them there for spring ball and see what you have. Mahon, Bates, and McGovern are going to start. Then Wright, Menet, and Gonzo (and Fries to a less extent) are fighting to start at the other two Oline positions with Mahon and Bates being swing guys that essentially can play anywhere.
