With Shea Patterson being able to start immediately for Michigan, and the immediate eligibility for Justin Fields at Ohio State, we're entering Wild West territory, and I'm sure that Franklin and his assistants will adapt. The excuse for Patterson was about a D, but the justification for Fields getting to play right away is an F. It's time for Penn State to start cherry-picking other programs for potential starters. Bluntly, I think this is a horrendous trend, but it is what it is.

Hey, who's a highly-rated freshman at Bama or Georgia or Clemson or wherever who's unhappy with his playing time? How about a really talented starter for Syracuse or South Carolina or Virginia who wants to play for a bigger name? Come on down!

And from what I can tell, it’s a way to clear room for schollies. Unfortunately, this doesn’t help parity in CFB and favors schools that could care less about things like giving kids an education

Actually, I do have some loyalty to the young man who made a commitment to PSU from the get go. May not be the best winning strategy, but I feel it is important to give opportunity to someone with us from the beginning. The import from another school could have been with us from the beginning and chose another school.

Some guy called me a "cracker" the other day. Going to check out Southern Cal next week. Always wanted to live near the beach.
What’s SC got to do with being called that disgusting racist term

Bring em on..... If that is what the NCAA wants, let's give it to them like no body else.... we have the best S&C program, the most electric homefield in all of college football, the best alumni base, we prep people better for the NFL than anyone now..... Let's stop being nice guys and play from our strengths. We do not have to take away a single scholarship from a loyal student to do this. That is pure horseshit.

Sometimes a guy like this can be a cancer to the team, who knows tho, don't care what happens to him honestly.

Can it really be called a commitment if it was never followed through with? o_O It's like making a pledge during a telethon then never sending the money.

Perhaps, but the two cited examples are Michigan and Ohio State, who historically benefit from different rule interpretations than most other teams.

Can only speak for myself, if I give you my word - verbal or otherwise, you can count on it.

Agree, and it can really decimate group of 5 and FCS schools. I know many here don’t care too much, but lots of smaller schools have great traditions and passionate fan bases as well. These schools sometimes benefit from big school castoffs, but the vast majority of their rosters are kids they recruited and developed. What if Towson finds a gem and the kid get recruited to Maryland after a year or two? I understand the kids experience that a very important, but we have to also make sure people still care about the games or there will be no scholarships to give out

Agree ... and might we read that as Ohio State, Michigan, or North Carolina?
As guilty as Carolina is of doing some very bad things - and believe me, they did - I have it on very good authority that Carolina is NOT an NCAA favorite. In fact, it's a love-hate relationship between the NCAA and the Tar Heels. The NCAA loves the revenue the Heels generate in hoops, but hate how they were totally abused by Carolina's legal strategy.

While I know most on this board disagree with the the final result of the Carolina scandal, I also know we wish PSU had fought even 1/1000 as hard to defend our reputation (for doing nothing wrong) than Carolina did (for actually defending their right to cheat). Maybe the most interesting part of this is that Carolina was only able to do what they did because of what the NCAA did to us. So, in a way, Penn State is responsible for Carolina getting away with cheating. I hate us

Let’s be clear the comment was made in the stands by a scholarship baseball player who lost his scholarship immediately. So you can transfer immediately if a fan yells something in the stands. Fields sister is on the UGA softball and there are many black football players enjoying life in Athens GA. This is all about not being good enough to beat out the starting QB. The rest of the story is simply bull$hit...

there will need to be some better process and rules as this thing moves forward. this first year essentially enabled an electronic system (old technology BTW) to preempt rules that would have kicked in without the system. things they might consider:

  • increase consequences of putting name in portal. a consistent answer might be you are no longer on your current team and no longer have a scholarship at the end of the spring and can no longer return to your current team.
  • put the onus on the player for contacts, and eliminate the school from making first contact. that is they way it was before June change. the system could just record what schools might be interested. more work if player needs to move.
  • another option would be to just enforce the 4 yr scholarship that was supposedly adopted in 2014. team cannot get rid of you and if you transfer it is "sit out a year". can still have a portal.
  • NFL has more control as players are under contract and not free on a year by year basis to just bail. you could create some similar system when players sign FR letter. you could take 1 yr deal, 2 yr deal, 3 yr deal or 4 yr deal. you break your contract early then you need to sit for the duration at your new school.
these are just ideas to keep some semblance of sanity in the system.

so what? when I was in college I could have transferred anywhere that I wanted and, if they gave me a scholarship, I was free to take it.

Here is a way to put a dent in it: “You are transferring (non graduate players), then here is the bill for your 1,2,3 yrs. of PSU tuition. Please remit $$$ ASAP.”

I reflect CJF's concern, no consequences in regards to commitment made. This allows no consequences at all. Perhaps if refund of scholarship $$ in regards to classes, room and board, etc. were attached, then players signing on line to commit need to think carefully about program fit, their ambitions, etc. What also needs to change is a dose of reality in the recruiting process too, such as really sticking to what the incoming grade expectations for student athletes are. I know, I'm hitting the crack pipe here, but what I see is the beginning death knell of college football as we know it. It has been going this way for some time now but the end will be here sooner than later.

Yes x 1000. What level of entitlement does this kid have that he’s afraid to compete? A QB lacking competitiveness is not the sort of leader I’d want on my team.

How come only players have to keep their commitment? What about all the coaches who bolt for better jobs?

But....but.....but.....I thought the student athletes weren't being paid???? You mean that free education will now actually cost them MONEY??????? You know...... like all the other students have to pay????? HOW UNFAIR!!!!!!!!

There is a lot of curiosity and pent up demand since this is the first year. You've got three years of kids who are first time eligible. I think, next year, there will be less kids. Second, I think there are going to be a lot of kids shocked that they are not more popular in the portal. Entering the portal is kind of like one strike.

Problem is that is a 2 way deal, and there are THREE parties here: player, school and coach.

Here ya go, son: the guy to whom you made your commitment is gonna bolt, you have no say in who his replacement is, but if you dont keep your commitment we will screw you over.

I don't think too many people disagree with that notion (if the coach goes, the kids have more freedom to go too). The challenge is kids that are in a stable, consistent program.

I am all for the kids, who have been exploited for decades as the schools make tens of millions in profits. But I understand Franklin's point: if you are a Fr or So who has under achieved, the portal gives you a way to justify your lack of performance and a crutch. Whereas, under the old program, you've either got to suck it up or ride the bench.

I suspect there are going to be a lot of kids in the portal that don't have a great seat when the music stops. They will experience the downside of the portal. That downside will limit its popularity next year. We'll see.
