Coach Casey

Dang, Casey had hair back then. I was there as were many PSU fans since it was in the BJC. Clint tried to ride Casey for the entire 3rd period and almost got there, giving up a very late escape to lose 2-1.

Yep. Some Penn State Wrestling Club members, including me, were up in the rafters for most of the tournament. We splurged a bit for the finals-only floor seats. It was also Cael's first championship and OW award. But everyone knows that. :D

Our seats were center mat, but top row, so for the finals (only thing televised back then) we were sitting right next to the camera man. We moved down many rows for all of the other sessions but for the finals the stands were full so we had to sit in our actual seats.

It was weird. Someone was selling the seats we bought at such a low price that we were worried they weren't real. Of course, we still had our original seats in case.

Matter I was also in attendance. I bought 2 tickets through the NCAA normal sales program. The seats ended up 2nd from the last row with the pigeons. Before season 1, Jake Herbert's dad through Ray Brinzer was able to procure great seats through Iowa. Brinzer had wrestled for Iowa. Now I had two sets of tickets. Before each session and during the first 15 to 20 minutes of the sessions I spent outside trying to sell the roof top seats. I ate every sessions damn tickets, no buyer's until the finals.

Before the finals two guys approached me as I stood outside. I would never make a good con man and my motto is to be as honest as humanly possible. These two poor guys had to listen to me give a 5 minute explanation of the tickets being lousy and wanted to give them full disclosure.

It was my 2nd NCAA to attend and I was bite by the bug. Never bought tickets through that outlet since, I go through colleges. I did have lousy seats for MSG but watching the kid from American, Terao and those finals were fantastic making the seats immaterial.

I'm glad Casey is here coaching others at BJC.

My memory of the 1999 NCAA's is a bit foggy, but I seem to remember Randy Lewis speaking at the Wrestling Club dinner prior to the finals and offering the prediction that of PSU's 3 finalists, there would be 1 champion. If so, Pritslaff made him a good prognosticator. I recall Randy being an insightful and entertaining speaker.

Good memory of 1999 NCAA's is Biff Waltzer's come from behind win to place 8th.

1999 question: Is Central Michigan 7th placer Ryan Cunningham a Casey relative?

Ryan, who was just hired as CMU head coach, is Casey's younger brother.

Also, Biff Walizer techinically finished 8th at NCAAs in 1999, but he got royally screwed and should have been 7th. Back then after sv you had a 30 second rideout and he was on top and rode his opponent for about 35 seconds before the bottom man escaped and somehow the ref and the timers awarded the escape WAY after the period had ended.

Remember this NCAA tournament well. A heck of a run by Walizer to even place after losing early. Having three in the finals at home was awesome! Sat in the lower level in a corner which was good from the perspective of being close but bad if I remember correctly since the mats in your corner were at least partially cut off when all 8 mats were used.

1999 was my first finals. I remember lots of folks thinking Lesnar would run the table, and I think he pinned his way into the finals -- but Neal was WAY too fast for him. And I remember Cael's finals match being the most dynamic and entertaining of the finals matches -- foreshadowing things to come. :)
