PJ Mustipher was the moderator. He is a mature and well spoken young man. It was a question and answer call the entire 30 minutes.
Key points:
Funniest question was if PJ will returns kicks. Pry responded that PJ can run but there is no way they would allow him to catch the ball.
Will Auburn be the whiteout? Pry refused to answer and said the focus is on Wisconsin.
Luketa - will be moved all over from LOS to LB as he can play DE or LB
Brooks - played his best football this spring
Smith - great improvement this spring as he is beginning to understand the game
Jacobs - will surprise people
Katshir - can play all three LB positions (no comment on health)
Ellis - can play db or safety with great cover skills and tackles well
Vilbert, Dixon and King will be new names heard this fall.
PJ - Can play the one of three technique which gives them flexibility with personnel and formations
Highly motivated team that improved each day through spring practice. Coaches talked to the squad about the opportunity at Wisconsin in the opener.
Toughest part preparing for Wisconsin is matching their physical presence. They do not change much year-to-year. Great challenge for Penn State!!
Prefers to coach on the field vs press box. Pry wants to look into a player’s eyes to get a sense if he understands the assignment and scheme. He wants to feel the player’s confidence. Those things cannot be done in the press box as it is a game of emotion.
Best workers on this year’s team are the best players.
Key to any season is building depth and playing multiple players. Team lacked depth last year because of no spring to develop players.
PJ, Brooks, Luketa, Castro-Fields and Brisker will be very good leaders.
PJ also commented at the beginning that the team is motivated and wants to erase the taste of 2020. Last year was not the standard for Penn State.
That is it from my notes but anyone else on the zoom call can certainly add something that I could have missed. There were no comments about schemes, 4-2-5 vs. 4-3-4, etc.
