Former PSU assistant Matt Dernlan resigned today from Binghamton. Tough day for me and most all of the wrestlers.

Can't really go into specifics, but will say that the p&%sification of America continues and our education system continues to be spineless in the face of helicopter parents.

Wow I was wondering what happened sounds like someone couldnt handle working hard and cried to the AD

Did he lock a kid in a utility closet like Mike Leach?
Not even close. Suffice to say that we are in a different era now. Unless you've got clout, a disgruntled kid or parent can end your tenure at a school or university if you're not meticulously careful what comes out of your mouth.

So he yelled at the wrong kid and said the wrong thing

i wonder if his past figured into his present and impacted his future.

Probably, although he has assuredly made that a one-off over the past few years. I would guess the chance he took earlier this year on a friend not working out could have impacted it as well.

It's tough. He's a good man. Can be a demanding coach, but a very good man.

Thank God for these type of coaches (demanding, tough love, pushing me to improve) from my youth. It may have felt personal at the time, because I was an angry, immature kid, but as a close in on 50, I totally understand why they did what they did and would not be where I am today without them in my life. Hopefully another head coach will see things in a similar manner and provide another opportunity. If they think a coach is hard, wait until this generation doesn't make their sales numbers (or many other real life examples) and get to have an enlightening review with their boss...

I thought Binghamton wrestled Penn State very tough. His kids wrestled with heart and certainly weren't timid.

I'm not up-to-speed on Dernlan's history with respect to some earlier transgressions. Can you elaborate, please? And, what happened to require his resignation for "personal" reasons?

He had an incident which is public record after nationals four or five years ago which involved a minor citation for having too much to drink (NOT a driving incident). Not excusing it, but not uncommon for coaches to have a few after competition if you've been to nationals - minus getting a citation for it. It was dealt with and has been in the rearview since then, I can tell you personally the guy will absolutely NOT drink in public at any time since then.

As far as the resignation, you can read between the lines above. Just BS IMO, but par for the course in today's educational system.

I think the biggest concern is now PSU might have to schedule a team in the top 20 in November. Lord help us if something happens to Kevin Ward.
