CLARIFICATION: He was added to field, instead of qualifying for the spot.

Kevin Foley, a former member of the Penn State men's golf team, was added to the field for the 116th U.S. Open, to be held June 16-19 at Oakmont Country Club in suburban Pittsburgh. He joins fellow Nittany Lion alum T.J. Howe, who earned a spot in the field through qualifying play.

Foley, a native of of Somerville, N.J., is competing in his first U.S. Open. He was the first alternate from the Summit, N.J., sectional. Foley, who is one of 27 players who advanced to this year's U.S. Open through both local and sectional qualifying, won the 2013 Panama Claro Championship on the Web.com Tour. He played in the Web.com tour in 2012-14, earning his PGA Tour status in 2014-15.

It's not like he was added on a whim. He qualified through merit, winning a playoff for the first alternate's spot in one of the tougher sectional qualifiers. He then got into the tournament when spots opened up because the World Top 60 Rankings didn't need to use all the qualifiers held in reserve for them.

I didn't say that he was added on a whim. Just a clarification.
