Cowboys-Ravens

One of the worst roughing the QB calls you’ll ever see gave the Cowboys life but Ravens hold on. Mind blowingly bad.

I'm guessing that they called the roughing penalty because the tackling player landed on the QB. Everything else looks clean.

These are big people and sometimes it's difficult to change direction and still make the play.

I see TJ Watt tackle the QB and bring him down on his side.

There was a hard tackle on Friemouth int he Steelers-Chargers game that looked like a vicious but clean tackle to me. they called the hit a personal foul.

Most of us have big screen OLED TV's that give us such a superb vantage point to critique each call.

That all may well be true but that is a ridiculous call in an NFL game that can turn on one play.

I believe that the league wants the player making the tackle to try to avoid landing on the QB with all of his weight.

It's obviously a subjective call.

And as much as I hate that type of call, the season is so long and the players are so incredibly big, strong and fast that there is a concern that by the time you get to the playoffs and the Super Bowl, the best players will not be available.

No one wants to see a team playing for a championship forced to sign players that were not even in the league when the season started.

You want your playoffs and championship game showcasing your best players on the biggest stage.

How do you shepherd these players so that most of them are available for the playoffs?

The play is a clear roughing the passer for multiple reasons

For starters--

"A defender cannot initiate a roll or lunge and forcibly hit the passer in the knee area or below, even if he is being contacted by another player."

If a defender goes low on a QB you're going to see a flag.

And I'm team Ravens on this one since I can't stand Dallas

What likely got the call was the fact that Oweh wrapped Dak in the upper legs, while Oweh's body was mostly extended, but then Oweh collected himself and drove himself, and Dak, upwards before then completing the tackle by planting him into the ground. On the one hand, I don't think he did it forcibly enough here that it should have been called. On the other hand, these are types of tackles they're keying in on and looking to discourage, especially when protecting their "stars," so I think we have to get used to this.

He hit him dick high - way above the knees. It was atrocious in real time

Did anyone see the cheap hit on Devonte Smith in the Eagles game? If he wasn't considered defenseless with two guys pushing him back and then getting blasted by a DL, I don’t know what is? His helmet came off. It was nasty.

I’ve seen a few Saints games. They seem like a dirty team - shades of the Payton era

That’s what they did (I.e. focused on driving him down) because, as any rational person can see, he did not go low. Even so, how hard can you drive a guy down when you yourself are on your knees? I thought John Harbaugh was going to have a heart attack

He didn’t drive him at all. He tackled him and landed on him. It was a ridiculous call.

Mid-thigh - there’s no knee joint there. I saw it in real time and from multiple angles.
His arms are literally at knee level which is going to result in that call. Refs not get multiple angles...they call it real-time. Read the rules. It was the right call

Lando not get multiple brain cells. We get to experience this real-time day after day after day. It was the wrong call. Literally.

It wasn't. You judge it on what the ref sees live when replay isn't available for them. Correct call. Far from worst ever.

He sprang up, lifted the QB off the ground, and drove down. But it was relatively gentle. In real time, it looked like nothing. Slowed down you can see the potentially problematic motion to the tackle ... but the end result was much of nothing. His right arm is also lower on the QB than the left ... closer to the knee ... seemingly lower thigh, though the hand still wraps around basically under Dak's ass. He received a style penalty.

It is not so much driving the QB into the ground in this circumstance, it's that he did not try to avoid landing on top of him.

Did you see the sack that Chris Jones had in the KC-Falcons game?

Athlon Sports linked article has a replay of this 'penalty' which IMO is just as bad as the call from the Ravens game. Jones appears to avoid landing on the QB but apparently still not acceptable in the eyes of this official.....

His arms are literally not at knee level. His left arm is textbook tackling technique ... his left hand basically grabbing Dak's booty. His body is slanted at point of attack, so his right arm is lower, but the hand is still under butt cheek (but lower than the right).

It's the pick up/explosion upward, and the driving down and through that drew the flag ... except it was done quite "gently" ... it shouldn't have been a flag, but you're going to get these overcautious flags to protect QBs if there are any hallmarks of potentially dangerous tackles, to stop defenders from doing worse.

That would never have been called against Ben, but you can't drive all your weight into driving the QB into the ground. The hit against Freiermuth was definitely a helmet to helmet hit.
The Steelers broadcast team, at least during the game, disagreed with you re: the hit absorbed by Pat. Primarily because he was a runner at the time he absorbed the hit and not a defenseless receiver.

There is helmet to helmet contact that occurs on the line of scrimmage on virtually every snap of the ball.

WRT Big Ben, what was called a penalty when the hit occurred on Brady or Manning often times would not cause Ben to be sacked. He took Lemieux like punishment while his peers received the Gretsky package.

Ben was as strong as an ox and yet couldn't gain an inch on a QB sneak way too often.....

Yeah as a Cowboys' fan I thought the call was borderline but he did lift him up and then fall directly on him. Hard to see all the complaining about this call given some of the other lousy calls yesterday and the fact that the Ravens were running the Cowboys out of their own building and had a 28-6 lead at one point.
