Crash at Reagan National airport thread?

people started blaming various politicians. So it was sent off to the current events board.

Well, that’s a shame. Was it that no current events may be discussed or was it the lack of restraint regarding political issues that got it removed?

well, the guideline is that posters can comment on the facts of the news event. But when people a) start blaming a specific politician or party and/or b) start taking personal shots at posters the thread will be shut down, deleted, or moved.

It is a policy that I support but it is really difficult to administer.

Well that’s a shame……..this board used to be wonderful with a wealth of information. I , personally, don’t want to hear about politics. I also don’t like personal attacks. Having said that, if the mods also don’t like those things, delete the offenders, not the thread.

If we can still post about the crash itself here.... I live near an airport and there are definite glide paths to landing at the airport, so I wonder if they have predetermined glide paths to the airport and if they do, why don't all military pilots know about these paths? Like if you're ever driving on the NJ Turnpike near Newark, you can see just a line of planes, miles out from the airport all following the exact same path, including elevation, to the airport.

Lmao. Go to the other board it’s all there

Well, I’ll post yet again……an army helicopter flew across the approach corridor of National airport. That helicopter was flying 100-200 ft higher than permitted. The Regional jet was on glide slope and aligned with the landing runway.

Female pilot of the helicopter didn't get the memo.

That could be a full time job.

l think if you put the offenders in the sin bin for 30 days instead of just deleting posts it would be far effective. Then keep doubling it each time they do it.

That would certainly discourage people from violating the rules. Once a couple hit the penalty box others will get the message.

The male instructor was on the radio with the visual separation request - he was looking at the wrong plane

But dEi. Now a bunch of maniacs will torture her family like Alex Jones and his minions did to the Sandy Hook parents
Everyone should be forced to watch the Truth vs. Alex Jones. You will see the disgusting conspiracy laden mental illness destroying this country. Fed absolute garbage information. Sick stuff.

Putting the Test/Politics Board behind a paywall had the unintended consequence of squelching speech on this public board, as we have just seen by the thread on the plane crash. It had the (intended) consequence of crushing political speech as well (on the Test Board, given that the public can't see it and some people simply left). Why post on a board that only a few people will see and read? Why pay for that? The board becomes a magnet for extremists, leaving out the people that really need the discussion.

I understand why all of this happened and it totally goes against the grain of the purpose behind having higher institutions of learning. In the end, everybody loses, even those who frequent this board during the off season looking for advice of various kinds. Yes, it was once a great thing ... now gone.

College Football is trending towards a similar fate ... unintended consequences associated with fixing one problem but then creating another problem that is worse than the original.

I used to comment quite frequently on the test politics board. No more. I suspect that the management was simply trying to kill it. I would even pay for it if I didn't have to use a credit card and could use a debit card but they don't allow that. Have no idea what they are up to but if I'm going to pay for a politics board, it will be in the manner that I prefer.

And here we are ... with the mentally ill folks who can't stop themselves from making the events of daily life into a conspiracy/political/agenda-driven cesspool, trying to bash others, rather than realizing the problem is them, and their mental illness(es). You can even see it with the especially sick folks who post updates from twitter ... even when they're innocuous updates, they're still from whacko accounts. We really need to reemphasize involuntary commitments to mental health facilities - where those folks can scream that everyone is out to get them, and that's the only reason they're in there (like in the good ole days, when we properly segregated the paranoid schizos from the rest of society).

It's very simple. It's very straightforward. This is the free board. If you want to post about politics and your socio-political views and agendas ... either pay the fee, or yell it into the mirror, at the only person who cares about your whacked out views.

I would bet there is no other major airport in the country, maybe in the industrialized world, where someone decided it was OK to have helicopters routinely crossing the descent route of commercial jets. Hundreds of feet of altitude isn't "separation" in the world of commercial aviation, it's a near miss. That's crazy. Even crazier is reliance on tower voice communication to remind the helicopter pilots to watch their altitude and use human eyes (in the dark!) to watch for incoming jets. The fact that there was a controller position earmarked for this indicates someone made a helicotper-sized exception to normal FAA rules for airports. It's not a coincidence that the only place where this lunacy is allowed to happen is the very town where the Pentagon has enough political power to bully the FAA. This whole episode is so layered in incompetence, it sounds like something that would happen in Russia. There's no need for fingerpointing, just fix it and learn.

You should watch the Fall of Minneapolis. You will see the disgusting mental illness destroying this country.
Let me know if it gets to the level of people trying to sue and badger to dig up dead kids body to prove it occured. Always looking for moral equivalency. There is none with this one.

Let me ask you why you assume everyone on the right listened to Jones?
I always found him to be over the top, and a lot of what he would say was crap.
Let me add you are the one who brought up Alex Jones. You got the first thread removed and probably this one eventually.

I never said everyone but at heights, it had 4X viewership than Rush Limbaugh, Economist, Newsweek, National review.

Don Jr, Stone and numerous MAGA icons were regulars. I mean, Trump himself was Alex's guest during 2016 run. Let's not paint picture that it was not one of major information feeders of conspiracy garbage to right.

How much viewership would he have today, with most people looking back and realizing what he said was just garbage.
To many people take what he and others from both sides say as gospel, which obviously can be very dangerous.
I am done though, I try not to do this and go off topic, so good day to you.

true, according to what has been presented. But, so far, no one seems to have asked the question "how did ATC allow two aircraft to arrive at the same point - one at 200 feet and one at 325+/-25 - at the same time. Seventy five to 125 feet separation is way too close. Normally a minimum altitude spacing would be no less than 500 feet. Rotor wash and jet wash would impact both aircraft that close together. pucker factor of pilots in both aircraft would have pegged at max if they knew that there was only 125 feet of altitude separation during an approach

Didn’t ATC instruct/inform the helo to pass behind the plane (I’m paraphrasing because I don’t have the exact words handy)?

ATC told the helicopter to pass behind he jet. The helicopter pilots said they had it in sight and said they would provide visual separation. In my view, it’s still too close, but National airport has been notorious for these situations for a very long time. Helicopter traffic should be prohibited in that area especially when they are conducting circle to land operations to runway 33. Many pilots I know would argue that National airport should simply be closed.

Honest question... why don't those of you that want to talk about politics seek out and post on a political message board? I'm sure there are tons of free ones. This doesn't make any sense to me. I don't come here seeking anything other that college football topics, which is the purpose of the board.
