My father was just one of those brave soldiers that went ashore into heavy fire on Omaha Beach 79 years ago today. My fathers' grandchildren asked him what it was like after seeing Saving Private Ryan. All he said it was very noisy and confusing. I can recall the many days I would go with him to the Bellevue VFW where almost all the men were vets from the 29th and also were in those waves attacking Omaha Beach. They would sometimes gather in a small group when one of them was having a 'bad time'. They never really said anything to anyone not from their units. They did their job and came home (some never made it back).
I really miss my Dad on days like this.
