Daniel Day-Lewis quits acting

Gene Hackman quit acting several years ago. He's got plenty of dough, probably a pension from SAG and other interests. I think he lives in New Mexico. Day Lewis is considerably younger.

This is very disappointing. Possibly my favorite actor of all time.

I don't think there is another actor who put so much into his roles. The only other two I can think of are Christian Bale and Robert DeNiro, but DeNiro has been on cruise control for many years.

Honestly, I thought he retired 8 years ago after "there will be blood" - it looks like he's done a little bit since, but he's been pretty quiet. It's a real shame because he's absolutely fantastic. They need to pay these guys a lot less so that the need to work into their 70's like the rest of us

He's certainly been very picky with the roles he takes. Might have well been retired the past decade or so - he's done like two movies in that time. Great actor, but won't be terribly missed. Just too selective for anyone to get worked up about him. He's had like six or seven roles since 1971.

Is it picky or just really crappy roles available?
It seems like if it doesn't come out of a comic book, graphics c novel or is a remake Hollywood is lost. Frankly I think there is far better stuff being done by HBO, showtime, starz, TNT, AMC...

Maybe, but certainly plenty of good roles for white male actors in all mediums. He can afford to be selective and has been. Not sure how much one or the other has contributed to his success at the Oscars but my guess is it's certainly helped.

The one role he wanted and didn't get....

Vincent Vega, Pulp Fiction

I love DDL but not sure he works there, Travolta was the right choice after Michael Madsen couldn't get free to film. Character is rumored to be brother of Madsen"s Resevior Dogs character, Vic Vega.

just one role, absolutely fantastic as lincoln, picked up his third best actor oscar

Just my $.02 - but I thought The Last Of The Mohicans (remake) was a tremendous movie. Great acting by DDL and his fellow actors/actresses, heart-thumping battle scenes and beautiful photography.
It was certainly a good performance, but Ben Stiller's parody of it ruined it for me.

He'll be terrible missed by this guy. I certainly wish he took on many more roles, but I always knew when he did take one, I was in for a treat. It's like an incredibly expensive meal at a great restaurant. Sure, I only get to eat there every couple years, but if it closes, I'll still miss it a great deal.

Perhaps DDL cannot stomach the vapid scripts being produced by Hollywood these days. He is not the superhero tights kinda guy or a sci-fi kinda guy. He is not going to be in a kids movie any time soon either.

He probably doesn't want to be in the remake of "dude, where's my car?" Since Hollywood can't come up with any original ideas anymore.

This idea that Hollywood isn't creating original ideas is mistaken.

The problem is people aren't seeing the original films and therefore Hollywood is not promoting them as much as Transformers like films.

Why put a lot of money into original content when it doesn't pay? The films are there, just they don't do that well in the Box Office.

Obviously Hollywood is making original films. They just aren't making GOOD original films. If they were, people would go see them.

Hollywood is making good movies, just not many of them. Moonlight and Hidden Figures, I thought both were excellent, but they don't appeal to the larger moving going public.

I think he's a tremendous actor and will miss him too, but did you see 'Nine', his follow up to There Will Be Blood? Neither did anyone else. He's appeared in about a dozen films since My Left Foot in 1989 - lots of smaller movies that didn't get much attention, and of course, the big Oscar films. I always love his work and his dedication to it, but there are guys working today who can more than fill his void (Fassbender, McAvoy, Hardy). Very interested to see his final work with PTA though - he gets a lot out of his actors.
