Daytona 500

My schedule is cleared. Got the opportunity of a lifetime (To me anyway) to go to the 59th anniversary in 2008.

Cup super speedway racing is a bore unless you are waiting for the big one which will happen and tear the midfield out it. It’s a shame as restrictor plate racing has become a parade and demo derby. This year in Daytona there is one racing line. Hopefully a pack will get together and commit to staying low unlike what’s happened in any of the preliminary races....

I love the race but it doesn't have the personality it used to have, IMHO. Too many drivers want to act like badasses which is easy to do when they're safety strapped inside their cars. The reality is very few of them would actually challenge anyone face to face and even when they do they make sure crew members are around to make a show of pretending to hold them back. Give me the good old days when if someone had a problem with another driver they'd confront them after the race. None of this garbage with them throwing shade during an interview or tweeting something mean about the other guy.

The race is generally pretty boring nowadays. I'm ashamed to admit I watch to see the big wrecks as long as nobody gets hurt.

Nah... oval racing, particularly NASCAR’s horrible/manipulated new format and its spec-car formula, is barely even motorsport ... i do recall when it was kind of interesting, and it did not involve “segments” but it did involve real driver’s drivers

Give me real road-racing like British Touring Car Championship, DTM, and Aussie V8 Supercars anyday...

WATCH this clip from 1:20 - 2:22.... even the test-laps are Code Brown at old LeMans

NASCAR = over-processed spectacle - except they messed too much with what was the spectacle

Nothing else on... watched the first ten laps... I’m already bored...

It’s like watching a NYS Thruway traffic cam....

Too bad - because that type of driving isn’t a walk in the park for those guys out there, but god damn - it’s not worth watching - at least not until the final laps

Love those Aussie V8 Supercars. BTCC and DTM are great, too. That’s racing. US needs a series like that... fans would love it.

This is the one time a year I’ll turn on a nascar race out of mild interest. Can someone explain to me why there are different “stages” throughout the race? Are there multiple winners each race now?

It adds points toward the chase and guarantees two re-starts which wads everybody up again and semi-ensures you don't have somebody winning by ten laps. You do get credit for winning a stage but you've really won nothing but points although they do keep track of how many stages guys win. Winning races punches your ticket to the playoff system they now have.

Interesting. So you’re telling me nascar has a playoff but we can’t get one in CFB.

Any fans for the great Race!!
A real race car.

That looks like my Sunday drive.

TV ratings began to drop like an anvil (as a result of drivers laying back and not fighting for all 500 miles, in the case of Daytona, likewise these snooze-fest drafting chains from lap5 into the last ten laps) Nascar concocted stages to thwart viewership tendencies to tune in only to the last part of the race, as that was the only exciting part ...

Definitely played a role as well.

I think I stopped paying as much attention to the sport when the “car of tomorrow” came about. From my memory it made the races more boring because the cars were identical leading to the “drafting chains” as you put it.

The chassis the COT replaced weren’t exactly specific to the individual models (headlights tailights etc were mere decals even prior to the COT) , but yeah - the COT was as lame as it was a monumental leap in safety... and yes - these drafting trains are a literal show-stopper and make F1 look like a shoot-out

Awesome video! Thanks!

7:21pm and I’ve been watching cars parked at Daytona for the past hour... this is garbage

First guy to 500mi should win... no segments.... no pre-planned yellows... no overtime...

They killed this event

NASCAR is toast if they don’t bring back short tracks (Rockingham, North Wilkesboro, etc) and dump the shitty 1.5mi cookie cutters.

This was the most drawn out sporting event since the 2017 PSU -- Michigan State game with the big storm delay.

What a mess for supposedly the crown jewel of the sport.

And they are trying to shorten MLB games...

Harbest - i deem you as the BWI resident expert on NASCAR... well, what did you think?

The whole idea is to keep your car "clean" for the first 450 miles so that when the last 50 roll around, you're position to challenge for the win. The average person who doesn't know NASCAR from their asshole can't equate this from "boring" racing. You don't win the race in the first segment by going all out and taking yours and other cars out of it. Before segment racing, a lot of the smarter drivers would "sandbag" meaning they would drop back in the middle or end of the pack for the first 3/4 of the race just to keep their cars out of the crashes that were sure to occur up front. Segment racing changed that to an extent, forcing drivers to step up for most of the race. People who criticize NASCAR races apparently never drove 190-200 MPH with cars 6 inches to the side or directly on their front or rear bumper. They don't understand down force or drafting with other cars. I will bet that the strongest critics here never took the time to see what goes into NASCAR besides "just watching cars go in circles". I remember watching a F1 race seversl years ago where an unknown driver wound up leading a race up until the final lap where he was ORDERED to let his better known teammate pass him to win. That never happens in NASCAR. It's not perfect, it has it's warts, but it is American born and bred.

It's only five days until the Icebreaker at Lincoln.
Yep. Haven't decided if I'm going yet. I'm lucky as my wife is a dirt big dirt track fan. She's a Lucas fan, I'm Lance. Shame about Hodnett one of the nicest guys in the sport. Go Pa Posse!

The COT, ever changing points system and Helton's different rules for different drivers killed it for me years ago. They were rivaling the big 3 sports at one point then decided to change everything to make it "better" and now can't even sell out Bristol anymore.

NASCAR = Redneck

It’s a stupid event for Budweiser swilling Neanderthals who put decals of numbers on the back windshields of their pick up trucks. No thanks.
I’d rather watch cricket. At least they have a tea interval.

NASCAR did what all big organizations do...over managed the program. As someone else said, the cars are almost 100% the same. There is no character anymore. Add to that, cars, teams and sponsors change so much the casual fan cannot keep up. So what is the difference between Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson? I have no idea.

My sister used to work for Penske and knows several drivers pretty well. She got us pitt passes to a race in Charlotte that was very cool. We also went to a couple of garages. So I paid attention back then. But today, it all bleeds together and has no character. Daytona, with the restrictor plate racing is as boring as can be. You simply wait for a crash until the last ten laps. I understand it is pretty cool in person as the phalanx of cars is quite impressive. But on TV, doesn't translate....at least to me.
