Dearth of fresh topics.... new board format seems to have quashed many nonsense posts

the very nonsense postings that made BWI/McAndrew board a fun place to wade...

I think I can recap all of the post format-apocolypse nonsense topics as follows:

  • to rinse or not-to-rinse dishes before placing them in the dishwasher

I am thinking about all the many, many posters who insisted this new thing was the BESTEST THING EVAH !!!!!!

I just don't seem them starting any topics.

A couple of them participate regularly in some threads, but most don't even do that.

Probably the case that some of those "people" were not even real. I wonder what it is like for them to finally figure out that you are allied with fake posters, or even if they do figure that out.

I was thinking of starting a "Taconic Parkway: How Do You Get There?" thread, but I decided not to. It's been done.:)

I think we can agree that on balance the new format has been a net negative. Whoever came up with it is a very, very bad man.

If you want to see nonsense posts there a couple people who excel at that. We all know who they are.

Actually, I think the change is fantastic.

What isn't fantastic is a bunch of crotchety men who can't deal with change.

Actually, what isn't fantastic is the idea that every single change must be embraced without question or criticism. Young whippersnapper, some day you will come to realize that there is such a thing as change that isn't for the better.

You can't find the "Post New Thread" button I presume? Not sure how the software would otherwise prevent you from posting anything your heart so desires.

The phrasing there has a distinct whiff of India or Pakistan in it.

Far from it.

Though you don't see anyone ever posting with less than hundreds of messages to their name. You can frame your own reasons why, I have my guesses, but it certainly doesn't begin and end with message board formats.

No reason that this thread can't be the "Thread of Nonsense"....so I will submit something nonsensical.....

attached is a youtube video of Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie doing a scene from "Casino". This always cracks me up...

Warning - NSFW - turn down volume on speakers

How long has it been since a Neuheisel sighting?
OTOH Rick just said something to the effect, 'the first thing College football has to do is clear Joe Paterno's good name'. So he gets lots of rope with me, BTW last I heard he was in the Tavern

I find it hard to understand the complaints about this format. After you've read posts in a tread and you come back later, this forum takes you back to where you left off. It alerts you to new posts in the threads you've accessed before. I really like the changes; they are time savers.

This place has not been the same since Judge and Tom stopped posting the hottest polls and especially when you had to rate them in order as pictured. That required a good deal of contemplation!

There are numerous new topics generated everyday.

Here's my 2 cents...take it for what it's worth.

I was one that didn't mind the new format, and to a point, welcomed it. I liked several of the new options. Maybe it was easier for me as I was accustomed to using topic view (as it was my primary view in the old format). Every so often, I'd switch over to thread view when discussions got too big and hard to follow, but for the most part I was a topic view user.

All that being said, since the switch, I visit the board less frequently and post even less frequently. I'm not sure why. It does seem that new topics come about lesser and lesser. If I had to guess, that is because the guys that used thread view weren't pigeon-holed into seeing the same tired topics all the time at the top of the page since thread view didn't put the topic with the newest post at the top. Because of that, I think they were more inclined to start new conversations/threads/topics. From that standpoint, whether you viewed the page in topic or thread, it kept the front page fresher. Maybe the posters who prefer thread view aren't posting as much, therefore leaving the front page to stay stale because those who prefer topic aren't accustomed to starting as many new topics as the old thread users were.

Just a guess, I'm not really sure. All I know is I post much less often than before the switch.

Pretty much agree with all you said.
I still wish there was a quicker way to navigate from the free board to the pay board. I don't know why Rivals cant put both in the bar at the top of the page. But thats really my only gripe.
As for some of the posters, I've noticed a lot of the long time and some of my favorite posters and board friends are gone.
I haven's seen a post from CoolestFish for a couple of weeks and PSUPelly has been AWOL pretty much since the change.
But it is summer and this board has always kind of spiraled down this time of year.
Hopefully it will pick back up once August rolls around.

Reminds me of an old joke:

A very self-important university freshman attending a recent football game, took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen sitting next to him why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation.
"You grew up in a different world. Actually, an almost primitive one," the student said loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. "The young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon and our spaceships have visited Mars. We have nuclear energy, electric and hydrogen cars, computers with light speed processing and, ," pausing to take another drink of beer.
The senior took advantage of the break in the student's litany and said, "You're right, son. We didn't have those things when we were young. We invented them! Now, tell me, what are you doing for the next generation"? ;)

The applause was resounding.

Not sure if some of you somehow set your computer to an unknown setting that prohibits you from viewing new posts but for THIS TIME of year the new topics are right about where they always have been. What is down is the number of responses to posts which make absolutely make no sense unless you using a setting that is outdated by 10 years. Change isn't for the better? I agree it isn't always better. Rivals knew this was going to make a certain group angry I'm pretty sure but I think they basically sacrificed the anger of that group(most of who don't subscribe) for a group that makes a larger percentage of message boards up and potential new subscribers in exchange for what you would have thought was temporary anger at a new format that is actually just as easy to use.

To me the new format inhibits quickly viewing the breadth of responses to any topic, relevant to me or not, so I don't go thru the trouble of opening and reading all the responses and am therefore less likely to find a response worth responding to. It has made the board of less value to me.

I've said a number of times that I was determined to give this new format a fair chance and I have. I've even posted more often with the hopes that the more I used it the more I would like it. Sadly, that has not happened. I don't like it, and as more and more of the old timers leave, or post less often, I like it less and less. It's boring. I don't expect to leave, but over the past few days I've started cutting back my visits. My plan is to stop in at the beginning of the day to see if anything happened overnight. Then again at lunch for a quick look, and a final visit in the evening. I'll probably increase my time here during the football season, but I fear the end result will be like when I gave up my season football tickets. It was difficult at first, but it became easier as time went on and now I barely miss them at all.

I agree with MM and fairgambit. I come here less, stay less and post less. Unless this board and the pay board changes during the football season I'll probably not renew my subscription. For those that like this new format well you can have it. I sure do miss ILLINOISLION's daily wit.

Absolutely agree. While he still posts, although less often, the new format is not conductive to his wit and it's something I miss as well.

I think part of the reason why people don't like creating new topics is because if you do there is a certain segment that wants to kill the person that creates a "fun" new topic. You forget to put the "OT" in, your dead.

I love new topics because it keeps things interesting. I really enjoy Tom's board and the premium but I think he even enjoys new topics. Some people think anything unrelated to PSU football is offensive for some reason, even in this down time of year.
