Trojan Insider's Peter Ghersen reports that USC will retain HC Clay Helton for the 2019 season.

Wow. If this turns out to be the case, it would be a major reversal on the general public expectation regarding Helton's fate at the end of the season. At least publicly, Helton has insisted down the stretch that he has support from the administration, even as the Trojans' season has begun to fall apart. 247Sports' Ryan Abraham backs up Ghersen's report in general feeling, writing that "[m]ost of the sources we talk to inside the program or working very closely with the program feel that Clay Helton is coming back." USC is currently sitting at 5-6 on the year and will need to beat Notre Dame on Saturday -- good luck -- in order to reach bowl eligibility. We've been exceedingly underwhelmed by Helton's methods throughout his time with the program and think they would be better off taking a new approach.

Peter Gherson has 100 followers on Twitter so I'd be hesitant to say this guy is an insider. Also, USC fan boards have no idea who he is.

The guys on BTN just said Helton has a $15 million buyout. That could keep him there.
The only buyout number I've seen that's crazier than that is Kirk Ferentz's - something like $22.5 million right now. But I'd guess USC could scrape together the money if it wanted to.

Ghersen is a student at USC. He does sports broadcasts for the student radio station and writes for a USC website. Could he have access to information? Possibly. Does he? Who the hell knows?
Wizzer is a troll trying to stir the pot.

It's noteworthy for 2 other reasons other than a guy with 200 twitter follows and rising said this: 1.247 guy confirmed his story 2. Rotoworld picked it up (if you follow rotoworld you'd know they make sure it's someone legitimate first or don't put it out. In fact, they stop citing reporters who give inaccurate info)

Anyways, who knows and things could change when Notre Dame curb stomps them but worth mentioning.

Besides, coaching searches for Penn St keep us busy in the offseason so no big deal either way

They also said USC has no University President at the moment so it's probably not the time that a major financial decision would be made. Is this true? I mean that's a pretty big deal in my mind

I can only imagine CJF said something like “let’s post pone til next year, the peices are coming together for a run at the title and the PSU buyout will be less” ;)

Clay won the Pac 12 two years in a row and the Rose Bowl his first year. He deserves a fourth year, but its tough to survive a 5-7 year at USC.

Just another story invented by the press on a slow news day.. nothing to see here, move along.

Rose Bowl victory two years ago for USC and a Cotton Bowl appearance last year should build some equity. I think Helton will be there in 2019.
