While the offense sputtered almost all day- especially McSorley, I thought the defense played quite well today. I'd like to single out a couple guys who I felt really did well. First, the much maligned Coa Farmer. Maybe playing Sam is better for him because he seemed to do much better today than in weeks past. Mustopher played quite well, too. At least that's how it appeared ot me. I thought Oweh did some nice things in there. Of course, the usual suspects shined- Yetur Gross-Matos, Shareef Miller (except for that dumb penalty after Parson's sack), and Robert Windsor had some nice moments. I know, it was Rutgers but still, anything can happen (ask Ohio State today, sure didn't expect that score- and Indiana just went up on Michigan late in the first half, crazy).
I get the complaining about the offense- but according to Steve Jones in the pre-game, McSorley had a terrific fweek of practice. I don't know what's up with him but he seems to me that he's just trying too hard. I also think he plays much better when he's playing with some urgency. What I don't know is if WRs ran wrong routes (mostly frosh and rs frosh played versus Rutgers, which I thought was a good thing) or if it was all McSorley. I tend to think it was Trace because he missed wide open WRs all game. I, too, was frustrated.
Also found it interesting that at critical times in the 4th, Wright and Miranda were in there- hmm. McGovern was dinged up a bit but I think he had already been back in before Miranda got put in. Also noticed that when the 2nd team safeties were put in, it was Sutherland and Wade. Wonder if LaMont is beginning to get it? That would be great for the future.
Gillikin punted pretty well- got some real boomers off today, too bad we couldn't have downed the ball deeper rather than them getting the ball at the 20 on the touchbacks.
Anyway, not at all what I expected today but glad we won and especially happy with the defense overall. I'm sure folks can find something to complain about with Rahne but I had very little to question, I thought we had a good game-plan and but for Sanders fumble late in the game, the 4 minute offense was run to perfection with the emphasis on "run". I love Sanders but how many times has he fumbled deep in the opponents territory?
Now on to Maryland- gotta play better on offense if we expect to beat them.
