I grew up a Steelers fan but it is impossible to NOT root for the Browns here in CLE. The bad luck, and their own bumbling, have made them such a sympathetic franchise. If you root for the underdog, they are the ultimate. And they've lost games in such weird ways it is unbelievable.
Last night, they were without their starting LT, QB, and both all-pro RBs. Their top two WRs are injured but playing and their #3 got pulled off the field after the first series for a groin. The first string RT is coming back but not 100% with a sore ankle. So I knew the 3rd string RB was pretty good. His name is D'Earnest Johson.
If you like these kinds of stories, DJ is one of the best. He graduated from South Florida and ran a 4.8 40 at the combine. He went undrafted then cut from the Saints as a walk on. He wrote a letter to every single AAF team and finally landed a spot with the Orlando Appolos while making a living as a fishing guide mate in Key West. He was the second best rusher in the league until they folded.
He went to camp with the Browns in 2019 and made the roster but only had 4 carries. He is now behind all-pro Nick Chub and all-pro Kareem Hunt; buried behind the best running back tandem in the league. So both get hurt along with several other players. What does he do? 146 yards rushing and 22 pass catching. He was really great; breaking tackles and finding holes were there weren't any. And when everyone in the stadium knew they were going to run to milk the clock, he kept getting five, six and seven yards per carry.
And, he seems like a great kid. Really humble and appreciative. Great to see.
