I wasn't a big fan during 2019 preseason, but in retrospect, the defection of about 10-12 guys who didn't really want to be in Happy Valley put us into a position to field a team of young, hungry players with something to prove and we finished with a surprisingly successful season. Even Lamont Wade came back from 'the portal' with a new 'tude.

Not knocking the players who left, but we seemed to emerge even better after the thinning of the herd.

Maybe Wade was looking for a guaranteed starting position and when he found there were no takers, it motivated him to stay and fight to be a starter. He vastly improved this year and should be proud of himself for sticking it out and working to have a banner year.

Let’s start by asking which players who left PSU performed better than who stepped up or were brought in? Agree that time will tell.

Right now, if the 27 kids in this class all sign, we'll be 8 over the 85. That means 8 kids have to go to the NFL, transfer or retire from football (this is already accounting for YGM to the NFL, but not Shorter transferring). If Shorter definitely leaves, then 7 more spots need to open somehow. Looking down the roster, who might try the NFL? Hamler is the only guy who hasn't announced his intentions yet of the guys most often mentioned (Fries, Menet and Freiermuth are returning). Is anyone else in position to be drafted? I'm not sure.

I don't want to speculate on who might transfer. I never get those right because I don't think playing time / spot on the depth chart is always the biggest reason. And guys on the first team sometimes decide to transfer as well. So that's just a guessing game.

Quick question, How many of the 85 are walk ons who received a scholarship for just this year?

or greyshirt, or be processed like the big OL the other day

I think Isaac Lutz is the only walk-on still on scholarship. I mean with 2020 eligibility.

But I could be very wrong, too.

Lutz can come back as a fifth year senior, but he's not included in my count. So that could actually add another.

Cam Sullivan Brown would seem like a guy who might re-entertain the transfer option.

Donovan Johnson and perhaps one of the RS frosh QB's might be a possibility.

Hippenhammer wouldn't shock me either. Plus we have about nine kickers/punters.

I could see Hippenhammer giving up football to play baseball only.

my guess would be of those punters/kickers still on the roster, only stout has a ship.

How many count towards last year @MJG-90 ?

Here's the current situation via fos scholorship matrix.

http://fosshipmatrix.elasticbeanstalk.com/

That site lists Isaac Lutz as a senior in eligibility; however, the Penn State roster lists him as a junior in eligibility, a senior academically.

I counted us at 79 scholarships this season, with 11 seniors. The transfer of Shorter and the move to the NFL for Yetur should mean we are at 66 until more announcements are made.

I know ... math. But I'm married to a lovely lady with a Master's in mathematics ... a "get out of math jail free" card, no?:D

So can they count 6 of this years EE's for last years class?

Oh oh, Pearl ... you channeling Art here. ;) He likely has the correct answer.

I think Art explained a while ago that a program can keep "counting" scholarships back as long as it doesn't exceed (a) 25 initial counters or (b) 85 total at one time. Apologies if I am misrepresenting what he said.

I think we signed 23 in 2018 and in 2019, and only 21 in 2017. The more important number problem (as opposed to a "word problem") is getting down to 85 if the 26+ guys committed all sign next Wednesday.

Hopefully Art will chime in to correct any errors I just made.

Thanks and I actually deleted my post after realizing how dumb it was and hoped you wouldn't reply. Haha! 85 is the only number that matters.

Sorry. I am usually never very prompt about anything any more (cue the Outraged Bob here for a snarky comment:eek:), but the recruiting number is one of the few topics I feel qualified to come in on. And that's not a sure thing.

Have a great weekend.

No, you explained the situation correctly. Unfortunately, I don't know how many EEs can be counted back to last year because I don't know how many 2019 EEs counted back to 2018 because I don't know how many 2018 EEs counted back to 2017.......I think you get the picture.

Looks like the people keeping the FOS matrix are tracking EEs, but I don't understand the difference between the two lines that refer to them.

I don't believe that really adds to the total if Lutz returns. Awarded walk on scholarships are one year deals only, only re-established if both sides agree going forward.

Who knows what Shorter attempts to do going forward, but with CJF when a player announces to the Portal CJF describes it as if a player is looking, then we (CJF & his staff) are looking. So if CJF feels he has as good or better WR's coming in (2 redshirts and 5 true freshmen may fill that need) he may have already closed the door for Shorter's attempted return in order to use the scholarship at another position. i.e. for the 27 2020 commits that want to sign with PSU this coming signing period. Or he may tell Shorter that when thek 2020 signing period is over, after the February signing day, and there is a scholarship available he would then consider Shorter coming back.

But IMO I just don't see Shorter wanting to return. It took some petty sincere dissatisfaction with his status on the team to announce to the Portal before the season was over and also miss the fun of the bowl game festivities....

Well, you also have seniors who whether they are drafted or not will free up a scholarship because they have no eligibility left.

1. Cam Brown
2. Jan Johnson
3. Garret Taylor
4. Steven Gonzalez
5. Nick Bowers
6. John Reid

That's six guys right there off the top of my head that will not have any eligibility left and will free up a scholarship no matter if they play in the NFL or not.

The answer is in the recruits we sign in the next class......We'll know in about 3 years and even then just a guess as to who got an offer just because of an opening from someone who left in the portal.

They are already factored into the totals. The counts only include those with eligibility remaining plus current commits minus YGM.

No. It made Ohio State, much, much better and Penn State worse by extension.
