Did you think we were going undefeated this year?

Or did you think we were better than Alabama this year?

Neither did I- so we're moving on, and CJF and company are still recruiting hard.

It's coming, and it's not so vary far away, either

For this year, this team is perfectly capable of winning out, so let's hope for that.

Agreed. We lost a lot of veteran leadership. This is not the year for us to go undefeated. We're progressing rapidly, though, and are much further than anyone had any right to expect after devastating sanctions.

Almost everyone on this board predicted OSU to blow us out.

Now half the board is disgusted we lost a close one we could have won.

Yes why not us? Vet QB vet OL gives you a good chance

I thought we were going to win last night up 12 with 8 minutes left in the game. Is that unreasonable?

I never though we were gonna lose last night until after tha 4th down play.

I thought we were going to lose at halftime when we dominated the stat sheet and were only up 6. You don’t get to leave that many points on the field in a half and expect to pull it out against OSU. You only get so many opportunities per game and we didn’t cash enough of them in. You knew their offense would wake up in the second half, they couldn’t have played worse.

I did think the D would not collapse in the last 8 minutes including giving up a 96 yard drive for the winning score. Especially with a inexperienced QB backed up in our student section.

But seeing forth quarter collapses throughout Franklins tenure, including two this year, I will have to adjust and accept it

Actually, I thought that if PSU could get by OSU, they did have a great opportunity to go undefeated. I think this team (if it can stay healthy) is capable of beating anyone else on the schedule. And I think they'd be capable of winning the CCG. At that point, well, anything can happen, right?

But there's nothing like putting out a straw man about "going undefeated" or being "better than Alabama" to, I suppose, excuse less-than-optimal decisions/play-calling.

Point being that you have to take advantage of opportunities and get the job done. Penn State still could make the CCG and even the CFP, IMHO, but now they need a lot of help to get there.

Undefeated seasons are rare- because being good isn't enough. You have to be very good AND lucky. I always hope for one, and never expect it.

I didn’t say I expected it. I said I expected it if they beat OSU. They should have won last night. I believe many here feel the same way.

I understood that- I'm saying that winning last night would have been no assurance of going undefeated. Ask tOSU about that after they beat us last year then lost to Iowa.

My underlying point is that this still can be a GREAT season and everyone ought to come in off the ledge. (and that nobody here knows 25% of what the staff does about football, so all the "shoulda, coulda, woulda" sounds pretty dumb)

With as much talent as we lost, the number of starters we replaced on defense, and the very difficult schedule, I expected 2-3 losses. We’re playing much better than I expected

If they finish 11-1 am I allowed to say they should have finished undefeated? What’s great about not winning your division or your conference? You think OSU would say they had a great season if they’d lost last night and finished with 1 loss and a second place finish in the division? I don’t.

there is no law against being wrong- so say whatever you want to

Your question suggests that only the team that finishes at #1 has had a "great" season.

No. I didn’t say national championship or bust. Again you didn’t answer my question. Is second place great? Say second place in the division is great if you think it is.

One word answer. No.

But losing a heartbreaking 1 point game two years in a row is tough on ones psyche, especially one that should have been won.

You want to define the conversation- you're not going to.

I've been a fan since 1966, and in all that time I've been fortunate enough to see five undefeated seasons- FIVE. But I've seen more great seasons than that. If you want to sulk because this won't be a perfect season, then go ahead and do that- and plan on doing it many more years than not.

2016 was great, so was 2005. My bar isn’t perfect for greatness. Is second place in the division this season a great outcome?

I thought 11-2 and a two-loss Big 10 team could still be a heck of a good football team and it will show in the Bowl game.

I called 10-2 before the season, and I think 11-1 and the Rose bowl is definitely doable but I'll probably stick with 10-2

I'm not sure what part of my answer earlier you didn't understand. I've rejected your premise.

True, but what's so tough for many to take is, even if they expected a blowout loss, for the 2nd straight year this team had it in their grasp and let it slip away. I feel badly for Trace and the other seniors. They will never have this chance again.

Yes and that is tough to take... losing at the end. But for the program that is 10x better than losing by 21.
The recruits must have been amazed.

After Appy State I thought 8-4. Now I would say 10-2

at the start of the season the majority of this board as well as almost every analyst had PSU at either 10-2 or 9-3. Nothing has changed in my mind to change that outlook. it will be hard though.
