Disconnect between Franklin and Stevens’ family?

Articles from McGonigal and Poorman.

Comments from Stevens’ HS coach raise some good questions, especially the “looking over your shoulder” part. Is Franklin convinced TMS can be a reliable starter?

If Franklin lobbied hard for Stevens to stay instead of transferring and TMS stayed, why not name him the starter? And why the edginess from the Stevens family? Could Stevens still be considering a transfer?

I’m sure that when Stevens was considering a transfer, Franklin told him that if he stayed then he would have every opportunity to win the starting job in 2019. Even though he’s hurt and not participating, Franklin talks about Stevens as though he’s the starter. Why on earth would he name a guy who hasn’t been healthy in over a year the starter in April?

I don't see anything unusual in the article. Why would Stevens stay if he isn't the starter? If healthy, he will be the starter.
Trying to create a "disconnect" with the family is a belly laugh. I thought Dad sounded respectful (especially for Clifford) and responded to questions in a thoughtful and realistic manner.

Because Sean Clifford is the better QB...

It's stupid to assume what Franklin is thinking, though some here will anyway. When Franklin makes a definitive statement, then we will all know. Until then, it's all bullshit.

I agree, but people are questioning why Stevens isn’t already announced as the starting QB.
He seems to be willing to take risks- forgoing surgery as he did was probably one I wouldn't have taken. Staying was another risk- if he doesn't get the job, it's probably going to be too late to win one anywhere else.

Franklin is handling this just as a head coach should. If you make the decision too early, maybe Stevens or Clifford transfers. Same thing could have happened when Stevens and Mcsorely competed.

No one should be handed a position when you have great talent competing. I think Stevens wins the job

Would you prefer a disconnect between Stevens family or clifford's family. Would you prefer Stevens to transfer or cliddord? Can't make everyone happy.

Coaches needs to be loyal to winning. That is what makes most players, media and fans happy.

It's like every other position on the team. Jobs are won, not awarded. There is a lot of talent in the QB room, at least three QBs who have been in the program long enough to run the offense, but no one has a lot of playing experience. And Stevens is coming back from a serious (unknown) injury and has not been able to play. So of course there is uncertainty but that's not anybody's fault -- not the coach's, not the player's.

And let's not forget Stevens was open to transfer. I don't blame him for that -- it's no lack of loyalty to PSU but if another team could have guaranteed a starting position for 2 years, he probably would have (and should have ) taken it.

It's the unfortunate nature of the QB position in college football. These guys need to play in games in order to develop, but only one can play at any given time.3/4 of the 500 or so QBs on scholarship are reserves. It's tough odds, even for someone as talented as Stevens.

Did Franklin ever name Trace the starter in Spring Ball? I think most of us would be shocked if Stevens isn't the starter (if healthy), but Franklin wants players to compete over the summer and into the fall. He said at his press conference that Spring ball is about development and no one has been named a starter as that will be determined in the fall.

So, even Parsons isn't named a starter. Does anyone think he isn't starting?

Non story here.

The coaching staff had trouble picking between Tommy and Trace during a prolonged competition. One of CJF's great recruiting achievements was keeping Tommy here. This board rejoiced( "Touchdown Tommy...a true Lion for Life") and had he left, there would have been an EPIC MELTDOWN. Now Clifford comes in at garbage time and he's the "better" QB. You can't make this shit up. They left Stevens out of the spring game because if health, they already know who is the starter (and yes because he is the better qb).
ps as long as we're at it.....who is that genius coach from Purdue who became our hero when he beat Ohio State? Let's bring him in too......Auburn 63 Purdue 14. But he self assesses.

The reality is Stevens is not transferring. Where is he going to go? Franklin will either name Stevens the starter over the summer, when he is cleared and 100% healthy, or he will name a starter late in fall camp. Let's say he does the latter and Clifford is the choice. Tommy has no leverage here. With all that said I hope he has an epic season and then Clifford leads PSU in the next two years. That's a win-win for all.

Playing devils advocate what has Steven’s done to expect to have won the job at this point? We as fans have seen very little from him, and let’s face it, he has been average to poor when he has recieved playing time. The coaches have obviously evaluated him for years at practice and intimately know what he is capable of.

I personally have always been a bit perplexed of the love for Stevens around here. I will not be surprised if Clifford is the guy next year and I think that may be the best turn of events.

I guarantee there was no guarantee. Nobody is handed a job anywhere anymore. Tommy has to prove he’s healthy and that he’s better than Clifford or Levis or whomever.

Why shocked? What has he shown on film to be considered a starter? Good TE skills? Some overthrown lasers?
This battle won’t be settled till August, may the best man win.

Nothing. Which is why this “debate” will rage till August, and then some
The debate will be for fans.......The coaching staff will look at what is best for the team as a whole. They will decide that the team is better with Stevens as the starter and Clifford pushing him for playing time. Should Stevens be injured or ineffective, Clifford provides what appears to be a solid alternative. If Clifford starts, Stevens is gone. Clifford if injured or ineffective, would be replaced by Levis......not a good plan.

I didn’t advocate that he should be named the starter dude. Can’t understand however why everyone is so high on Stevens... that is all.
Don't know why I'm "so high" on Stevens....dude. i just think he will be the starter. Anyone who plays QB will have a lot to prove. That's why they play games. Every damn kid has a lot to prove every game day.

TS didn't stay last year because of loyalty. He was injured and transferring wouldn't have done anything for him. He knew that competing to win a starting position wasn't a possibility last season regardless of the school.

He was injured in camp. Long after he decided to stay.

Shocked b/c if you listen to Franklin, he has been praising Stevens and he is a 5th year on a young offense. Franklin has mentioned his experience many times. Don't forget that a hurt Stevens (Franklin said a significant injury) played over other QBs last year.

You are incorrect. Here is a quote from the article that prompted this thread.

"A serious foot injury kept him out of 2018 spring ball, forcing him to watch practice from a motorized scooter. The ongoing issue hampered Stevens throughout the season"

He announced he was staying on 3/28. Regardless, loyalty is not the criteria for being a starting QB at PSU. Tommy will start because that will work out best for the team.

Like many of you, I don't understand how CJF can name Tommy the starter....he has essentially been hurt for a year. I thought CJF handled questions on Tommy really well. It is unfortunate for Tommy, but at this point, Clifford has had a ton of reps that Tommy hasn't. I think Clifford has the look of a very good QB and a potential 3 year starter.
