Many kids may be fine with a spot start/backup role and be a fan favorite, learning from the best for a few years. Then transfer out for a shot somewhere else, like Bearclaw. No shame in that
I'm hoping some of the kids from pa that don't make the lineup transfer to lock haven. Would be nice to see them relevant again

As a kid from Lock Haven, I approve of this advertisement.
I was kinda hoping they'd also transfer to Bloomsburg, Clarion, Edinboro, F&M, Bucknell, Drexel, Penn, and Pitt as well as Lock Haven. But, DBall probably had a blast. He has four rings, a best friend named Aaron, got to wrestle in a bunch of matches, and got to go to Paris as AB's training partner. Not a bad gig.

not Pitt though

I live in Mill Hall and need an excuse to go watch lhu wrestling hope they keep getting better
from lockport or what was lockport before they tore it down for the dike. old homestead now torn down, but many great memories of lhhs
and lhstc wrestling. was in hs when lock haven had 4 state champs and was at lhstc during the grey simon /freddy powell/blacksmith bros. years. old gym was always crammed for all matches. also played fb at both lhhs & lhstc.(now lhu).

with all the great wrestlers in the WPIAL Pitt should always be an NCAA power!
Pitt has easy access to 2 of the 3 biggest regional talent pools in the country, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. And they're in-state to the other (Lehigh Valley).

Then again, if demography truly were destiny, Rutgers and Illinois would be top 5 more years than not.

Really, PSU could commandeer PSU-Altoona's team and move them up from D3 to D1 for wrestling to be a JV team of sorts. It's the same university, so the kids wouldn't even have to worry about transferring credits or anything, and it's close enough that they could all train together at the main campus.

Prime location is not enough, PSU being a flagship Big Ten school, having new facilities and a well supported RTC wasn't enough to get us anything more than one 3rd place trophy in the 2000s basically (and two individual champs, Hunter and Davis)

You need a coach kids want to wrestle for and of course can develop them. Sunderland could recruit, Cael inherited a lot of talent as I mentioned. Cael would go on to unlock that talent.

Quentin Wright
Ed Ruth
Frank Molinaro
Bubba Jenkins /s (kind of)

only for going to Coach Bubb's wrestling camp as a youngster, I hope Clarion becomes more relevan

Wasn't around for the Lockport era but heard good things about it. Lots of changes over the years from what I can see. I love hearing stories about Larry Rippey wrecking kids in high school.

Wait, isn’t Rutgers a perennial top ten team? 🤯

it appears Pitt is not big on wrestling which makes no sense!the papers follow high schools more than Pitt!

Pitt is where we were before Cael, and where anOSU was before Ryan -- a school that thought it was competing but really had no idea what that meant, and therefore was ignorant of their complacency.

PSU was still a very good team in the top ten many times before Cael Pitt not so much!

And we were happy with that -- even though none of those teams were within reach of the title.

We said we weren't, but we didn't actually do anything about it until Coach Lorenzo retired to become fundraiser in chief.

We also had a lot of finishes outside the top 20. Which never should have been acceptable.

Yes to F&M, Bloomsburg, Edinboro, Penn, Lehigh, Drexel, Bucknell, Lock Haven and Clarion.

But not Pitt.
I am certainly not a Pitt fan but as I have posted in a different thread, with a granddaughter getting ready to enter Pitt's nursing program I have been making efforts to show more Pitt support.

So with that in mind let me give it a shot.

Pitt's wrestling deserves more credit than I think most are willing to consider. Where else do they incorporate hookers into the training routines. If Ferrari had gone to Pitt he maybe could have avoided raping a young woman. He could have used one of Pitt's training specialists.

How do you all rank your fandom / rooting interest in the PA schools?

I know there are plenty of Lehigh sympathists on this mess board, but I'm curious to see how many. Lehigh bores & annoys me, and I cannot stand their brown color, so I'm always rooting for Pitt OR Lock Haven to overtake them for 2nd in the state. I'll even add UPenn, after Reina leaves it to Valenti following this year. So, starting in 2026 tourney szn, mine looks like:

1. PSU
2. Pitt
3. LHU
4. UPenn (coached by Valenti, NOT Reina)
5. Pennsylvania Western University, Edinboro
6. Bucknell
7. Pennsylvania Western University, Clarion
8. F&M (I went to Dickinson, so these guys are rivals in a way)
9. Bloomsburg
10. Lehigh

Apologies to Mountain Hawk fans; I love YOU, just not that program and I haven't let out any public h8 in like a long time so thx for bearing with me.

My first exposure to college wrestling was watching Penn State/Lehigh on Channel 33 in Hershey in the very early 1970s. Then when I went to college, I watched Lehigh matches on Channel 39. So I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the Engineers/Mountain Hawks. It didn't hurt that the late 70s was one of the best periods for their wrestling program. So I'd go PSU, Lehigh, Pitt, Penn for my favorite 4.

I have the same soft spot. Through the late 60s and early 70s I got to see most of the Lehigh PSU matches. Showing up as a kid with a Lehigh national champ got you escorted through all the backdoors into reserved seats. However, the current Lehigh style - occasionally attack while always backing up is extremely boring to watch.

Here is an article on the "hookers" story. I had forgotten about this one.
