This has been bothering me, and it's probably silly and stupid. I might not even have all of my ducks in a row on this because Penn State still hasn't brought me in to coach a Greco portion of the NLWC yet for whatever reason. I don't know the logistics.

HOWEVER!

Jane Valencia won Pan Ams. She qualified Mexico for the Olympics. She did so with NLWC people around her. She stood on a podium in a PSU sweatshirt. I am lead to believe she is an NLWC athlete. I could not tell you anything about who coaches her, how she trains, where she trains, etc. It ain't really my business. But, nevertheless, I'm lead to believe she's an NLWC athlete.

Do I wish the NLWC had more? You bet. Do I wish they'd dive into Greco more? Truck yeah, I do. But, the point is, they DO have a female athlete. I know Iowa is under scrutiny for this HWC women's group debacle. Personally? They get credit for me for funding them, and I don't know enough to make a judgement outside of that and how they're seemingly ending ties. None of my concern. BUT, it bothers me how often I see the defense (from all, not just HR or just Iowa fans... Shoot, Askren pulled this one on FRL today) that well "Penn State doesn't have women, Okie State, Minnesota... They don't have women on roster." Did they have 4 high-caliber girls training and funded? Absolutely not. But NLWC DOES have a women's wrestler. Minnesota's women's org kinda functions differently and it sounds like Augsburg is taking the reigns on that. I would guess they have a womens-centric RTC sooner rather than later. I can't speak on other places. RTC's have been primarily freestyle-focused thus far, but I sure hope GR and WFS start to get that funding.

Point being: Stop saying NLWC doesn't have a women's wrestler on roster. It's just like, incorrect. I think she's married to Espinal and maybe there's a bunch of moving pieces to how it all came about or whatever. She's an NLWC athlete until we're told otherwise. You're wrong. You're not doing your research. She just had a trailblazing performance to do something her country has never done. Prominent people in wrestling media and posters that I respect continue to push this narrative and it is incorrect.

/End Rant

PS. If I'm wrong and she really isn't, I'll eat crow and admit that I was worked up, wearing blue and white glasses like a homer nancyboy.

This is the text from a NLWC Newsletter, dated March 15, 2020...

Pan American Olympic Qualifier
Although there was some uncertainty if the tournament would happen, the Pan American Olympic Qualifier took place this past weekend in Ottawa, Canada. It was a big weekend for NLWC wrestlers!
Saturday
Jane Valencia, wife of Resident Athlete Jaime Espinal, also trains with the NLWC. In the Women's Freestyle Division, Jane (57 kg) made history by becoming the first-ever Mexican women's wrestler to qualify for the Olympic Games! Jane won four matches on her way to the gold medal, including a pin in the semi-finals over the reigning world champion!

Credit to Dave Hart and the NLWC.

It kinda bothers me when people do things like donating, working in soup kitchens and other charitable acts then go around making sure everyone knows what they did. Having said that, I hope the NLWC and PSU fans don't make much fuss about the club helping or financing women like Jane so they may one day realize dreams. As a group, it should make our hearts feel good just knowing what the club is doing for people. I say we continue to let Hawk fans make claims and then brag that they are the best fanbase, that Iowa City is the mecca for wrestling while PSU and the NLWC let their actions/results speak for themselves.

And yeah...I know....huge change in my thinking where I always felt I needed to defend PSU over on HR and point out all Cael is doing to make State College the new mecca. Like I said, it's starting to become obvious to even the most casual of fans. Time for me to let the results speak for themselves.

This was a very valuable lesson (one of many) I learned from my father. He is a very generous man, but he never wants his name attached to his acts of charity. Years ago the Warner Theater in Erie was being refurbished and our banker was on the fundraising committee. He solicited my father for a donation and when he saw the size of the donation, he offered to have a plaque made to be on display at the Warner. But he wanted no part of that and simply explained he thinks it is important to the community. They only thing I recall him attaching his name to is a scholarship he endows at Penn State. I think he gets a kick out of going to the luncheons with the kids that receive it.
That is one of the many things I learned from him that is invaluable.

Enjoyed this post. Thank you!

I agree with you regarding bragging a bit about donations and charity work but in the NLWC's case if they want credibility, they need to promote success so they get quality athletes to consider wrestling for the club as well as show donors that their $$ is doing some good.

Philanthropy is the best form of marketing.

People are willing to help you and buy your goods/services if you make it look like you give a shit about other causes/"injustices".

I agree your point, though. I don't see this as a charitable act, but I agree. I fault HWC 0. I think they support women's wrestling. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find any college coaches or high-level coaches that weren't all-in on supporting it. That whole narrative was a bit silly. I just took issue with the common defense that others weren't funding women athletes when it was publicly-known that PSU did. And it was decent-sized news roughly a month ago.

My brother. It is always good to rub a Hawks beak in it's own Hawk manufactured manure.

Dave Hart, the Executive Director of the NLWC referenced earlier is a super nice guy. One can't say enough of how this program has grown in the last decade. The coaching staff, NLWC admin, the Board and of course the resident athletes all moving toward the goal of World and Olympic champions.

It always nice to see Dave in the halls of Rec before the matches and he always has time to share the mission of the club.

The NLWC will never draw attention to themselves. Other than by the success of their Resident Athletes and others that choose to train here, even part-time. It's just not in the DNA of Cael, Cody, Casey, Jake, Marky, or Eric (as coaches). Nor will we hear anything bordering on braggadocio from the likes of Dave Hart, Richie Lorenzo, Jimmy Martin or any other board members or directors. Never happen, it really is a classy group.
