the angst over "coaching staff turnover" is, simply pathetic. (FWIW, I would have a hard time finding anything to care less about than an AC - from PSU or anywhere else - moving to another job. I DO, however - as highlighted by Shoop's case - take exception to overpaid prima-donna diva gym coaches, claiming to be mentors/leaders/role-models/and loving-father-figures, outright lying about their intentions)

Just as an illustration of D1 Football Staff turnover....I took a look at a NON-PSU coaching staff.

Listed each of the 10 guys.....Years in D1 Coaching, Number of Positions, Number of Programs, Avg Years per Position, Avg Yrs per Program

Head Coach - 26 years in D1 / 6 Positions at 6 Programs 4.3 years per position - 4.3 per program

OC - 32 years in D1 / 17 Positions at 9 Programs 1.9 - 3.6
DC - 14 years in D1 / 9 Positions at 7 Programs 1.6 - 2.3
Asst #1 - 20 years in D1 / 10 Positions at 7 Programs 2.0 - 2.9
Asst #2 - 16 years in D1 / 6 Positions at 2 Programs 2.7 - 8.0
Asst #3 - 15 years in D1 / 8 Positions at 4 Programs 1.9 - 3.8
Asst #4 - 11 years in D1 / 5 Positions at 3 Programs 2.2 - 3.7
Asst #5 - 9 years in D1 / 4 Positions at 2 Programs 2.3 - 4.5
Asst #6 - 6 years in D1 / 3 Positions at 3 Programs 2.0 - 2.0
and
Asst #7 - 20 years in D1 / 3 Positions at 2 Programs 6.7 - 10.0

Overall
169 Years of D1 Experience / 71 Positions at 45 Programs
Average of 2.4 Years per Position and 3.8 Years per Program

AVERAGE of 3.8 YEARS at a program!!!!

and that was with the one clear outlier of the group.....Assistant Coach # 7....WITHOUT including #7, the averages become 2.2 Years per Position and 3.5 Years per Program.

Who's Staff was this?

Well, the coaches are Meyer / Warriner / Ash / Alford / Fickell / Hinton / Beck / Coombs / Smith.....and some guy named Larry Johnson.

Penn Staters....for better or worse....have some COMPLETELY delusional vision of what D1 Coaching is.
It is a vagabond profession - for better or worse - at even the highest levels.

The OSU staff - probably the most SUCCESSFUL in the B1G - is made up of guys that typically spend less than 4 years at a program (meaning there would typically be a 2-3 man turnover every year.....EVERY year)

As of right now, IIRC, PSU has had 2 guys leave in 2 years.....well below the TYPICAL in D1 Football - we would need to have three MORE guys leave this year just to catch up to the AVERAGE.......and we have a fan base filled with Drama Queens who think the world is ending.

I do not think people are upset a coach left, it is how he left. It's one thing if you just do it and keep your mouth shut, but how Shoop did it was ridiculous, especially with what he stated the week before. As Josey Wales, er I mean Fletcher said, (edited in deference to simons96, the board Ebert) "don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining". It is also a lateral move. If it truly was family based then say so, don't bullshit everyone. Be honest about it.

Redlegs said it, not Josey.

I believe your comments are exactly why most are upset. At least that's what riles me. In reality, there's always the chance that an up and coming coach will be hired and do better. To think Shoop is the ultimate DC is ridiculous, so let's not mourn the loss but be optimistic about his replacement. Shoop lost respect for how he spewed insincere BS. He's the drama queen.

For Shoop this is NOT a lateral move. Tennessee is loaded with top defensive talent. So, as with PSU he is inheriting a ton of talent, none of it his. He will have two very good years and then he will get the head coaching job he really wants. His chances of that at PSU has passed as PSU is rebuilding and will take another 2-3 years for the defense (and the rest of the team) to be good again. He "pulled" the get out when it "appears" you are on top OB move.

So by definition a move to a similar position is not a lateral move!!!! Let's see Tenessees top notch D next year. Why did they fire their DC if the talent was there. Your logic is weird and totally based on personal opinion which is what is wrong with college football these days.

Silly me I thought PSU has been in rebuilding mode since the sanctions. I hope 7-6 isn't a definition of good.

dammit guys is was FLETCHER who said it.

I AM SO ANGRY AT ALL OF YOU NOW!!! WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Mea culpa oh Ebert of BWI! Lol

By the way, just got back from seeing the Revenant. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow! This will be considered an all time classic ala John Ford.

Remember when we had a staff that never left, some didn't recruit, some did, some just went through the motions and some went stale. We have some posters on our boards who only hate, they can't wait to post negative comments, wish the moderators would take charge of the posters. lol

That's what happens when your coach stays for 45 years. You get used to seeing HIM on the sidelines. In Penn State's case, he took less pay to keep his guys. He rewarded loyalty. He had changes, but the fans didn't notice because HE was picking the new guy.

I am outraged

And I am embarrassed. I confused Redlegs and Fletcher. That's what happens when you reach 70. At least I remembered it wasn't Josey.
