Did Hansard play at all against Iowa?
Going forward, who are the DTs? Tangelo, Ellies, Izzard, and ????. Does Mulboh (sp?) get pressed into limited reps? He is strong. Perhaps they try him out against the Ilinni? I guess Joseph Darkwa is still a year away from PT? Also assume the JUCO transfer DT is being redshirted.

Hansard is a big body. Has he not fully recovered from that bad injury?

Beamon not being available really hurts the rotation.

Your take or any updates appreciated.

gotta wonder if Traburton is big enough to slide down there for a few plays here and there and let Luketa and AK roam the outside.

At this juncture anything is a possibility. I believe Tarburton has played some very limited DT in the past.

I'm pretty sure I saw Hansard in the DT rotation at one point. #53.

Snap count report showed Amin Vanover played some, but I must have missed it. Anybody remember how he did on his plays?

I was not able to watch the game so I have no idea. Hopefully Hansard is able to step up and give meaningful/impactful reps the rest of the season.

He played DT (1) and DE (19) according to Roar Lions Roar snap counts. BWI does not list Vanover playing but the other players snap counts were similar so it was probably just an omission. I saw 56 in the game for one play at DT. He is built like a DE. I am not sure how well he will hold up at DT. IMO, he should be in the rotation at DE especially against certain teams. Hansard only played 2 plays which is basically what Fred is. He is best when his snaps are limited. In the past, he seemed to have foot issues? when he payed more than a handful of plays. I would think he could give the defense 10 snaps. I am hoping they give Mulbah or Brevard a shot next week since they are home. Brevard is now Penn State's biggest DT at 317 and Mulbah is 296. I think they need to find another DT with size to go with Tangelo, Ellies, and Izzard. You really can't count on Hansard more than a limited number of plays.

So it seems Hansard still has a nagging injury that limits his PT?

Ebikete, Tangelo and Tarburton
Smith, Ellis, Luketa and Jacobs
If they haven't practiced much wouldn't it be hard to implement 3 - 4 as a scheme makeover for the rest of the season? Or are y'all just talking about an occasional change up in the look?

Yep, I thought Hansard would be ready to go this season and possibly be the #3 DT, so it's pretty disappointing to me that he is getting a couple or no snaps at all during the first half of the season. Injury, doghouse, who knows.

But it would seem that the 4th DT has to come from Hansard, Mulbah or Brevard. Vanover is listed in the 260's so he could play some at DT as well.

Did Franklin ever say the Beamon was out for the year?? I can't remember.

With the ability to play 4 games and redshirt, and with van den Berg now having practiced for a couple of months, maybe the staff does consider playing him in a few games.

I thought Beamon had a season ending injury early in pre-season camp. I know JF said he was out for the year.

Cole Brevard is for me the mystery. He is our biggest and supposedly one of the strongest DTs we have. A 4* and thought this was his 3rd year on campus. He has played no snaps the last I saw. Hope we see him. Maybe he just is one of those players who was over rated. His HS film was dominant.

Please allow me to use this moment to remind everyone about the numerous times that I’ve said the was should be recruiting many more of the larger “war daddy” type defensive linemen. At some point, a stiff big guy may be more valuable than an athletic but undersized D lineman.

Brevard only been on campus 2 years. He was in 2020 recruiting class.

There just aren't that many guys out there, especially in the northern part of the country. Hansard and Brevard both fit that description on our roster. How many programs can say they have several of those guys in their reserves? PSU has 5 DTs over 300lbs on their roster, including PJ. The same amount as Ohio State, and one fewer that Alabama.

PSU won't be changing their defense. Ellies and Tangelo will be the 1s, Hansard and Izzard will be the 2s, if needed Mulbah will also get some snaps.

And there aren't many war daddys out there and everybody want them, so there's always that

There may not be a ton of 5 star nose tackles over 320 LBs, but we need a number of those large D tackles with prominent lower bodies. If you cant get the 5 star version, then go after the 4 stars. If that doesn’t work, then 3 or even 2 stars would be better than undersized versions trying to stand their ground against Big Ten O lines.

Many schools at every level have several DTs at 300+ pounds these days. IUP has three such DTs. It's more about if they can move at that weight.

A bit OT, but Slippery Rock has seven OL this season at 300+ pounds.

I don't believe Hansard is in the dog house. He seems to be one of the guys leading the team onto the field before games. Must be that nagging injury. We need some guys to make a jump. The opportunity is there, someone just has to go for it.

Per BWI protocol, a poster is generally limited to using only 2-3 question marks per post.

10 is way too many. 🧠

Most of our guys are 4 stars and we are doing what you described. When Franklin came here I was hoping for safetys and a secondary to seriously upgrade and they have. Was also hoping for good kickers and punters which has happened. He's picking up positions, one a time and dl and OL take the longest

And you think that's the answer? Trust this staff is doing everything it can to bring us the best defensive lineman it can. Not sure what to think of the new dl coach?

You are missing my point. My perspective of D line recruiting is that when we can’t get both size and athleticism, we choose athletes over bigger guys.

Freddy Hansard is going to see a lot more snaps now, and he is def more than capable! Time for him to step up!!!

We're not disagreeing, I want war daddys too but there's about 5 to 10 each year so it's damn hard to get one
Wouldn't be terribly surprised if Hawkins isn't your man a year from now. I trust my feelings a lot on this one but grew up with the family and they have all been over achievers . Great gene pool, root for him!

Hansard has never been the same since his bad break vs. M$U in 2018. But he’ll play some more backup now along with Izzard and Mulbah. Maybe something for van den Berg. Definitely the starters are Tangelo and Ellies. I don’t expect anything coming from Hawkins, Darkwa, and Brevard.

in the current situation, anyone who could be effective would be getting used. In the latest roster, I did not even see Hawkins. seems like Darkwa has been around here a few years and has never seen the field. Brevard was highly touted and is the biggest guy and does not seem good enough to even be a backup.

I believe Hawkins is on the roster and I believe I have seen him on the sidelines during some recent games.

I also believe he won’t be on the 2022 roster……

What number does Hawkins have? Looking at the roster I have, he is not on it. Given our need he must not be good enough to contribute or injured.
