Re: Some thoughts
Thanks Kid. Appreciate the feedback. I'll try and get the Rider and PSU issues resolved this weekend. Just out of curiosity, is the club called "Penn State Wrestling Club", or something like that with Penn State in the name? If so, that explains why they were added to the team (because my search algorithm looks for partial name matches...)
Regarding injuries, that's a very good idea....for next season. Also, since it's brought up alot (mainly regarding rankings) that redshirt wrestlers shouldn't be included. I will still leave redshirting wrestlers on the rankings because that was one of the things that I wanted reflected in the rankings...how do the redshirting wrestlers rank in comparison to the "regular" wrestlers.
What I WILL do, is add a "IsRedshirting" flag, as well as "IsInjured" flag for all wrestlers. That way they will stop showing up as starters for a particular team. I'll ponder excluding injured wrestlers from rankings, but that opens up some gray area....season ending injury, vs a Delgado type injury where they are out for the majority of the season.
So, the reason why I won't be doing any of these changes THIS season, is because of TourneyPool. I posted on HawkeyeReport yesterday to get some help with testing, but if anyone would like to help out here, feel free.
Here's what I posted on HawkeyeReport:
So, I'm almost done with the next major enhancement to WrestleStat. You may have seen some rumblings about it, but it's called Tourney Pool.
I'm sure some of you on here have already been doing this for past NCAA tournaments. Here's the concept:
You have a lineup that consists of 10 weightsYou must select a wrestler for each weightEach wrestler is assigned a point value determined by the wrestlers seed for that tournamentYou are not able to use more than 1000 points, total, for your 10 selectionsThere are 3 tie-breaker questions in case there is a tieAfter the tournament is over, each lineup/submission gets points based on the points earned by each respective wrestler at that particular tournamentThe points earned by the wrestler in the tournament are what are awarded to each submission (ie advancement points, bonus points, and placement points)There is a "legend" that shows the point values per seed for each of the respective tournaments that are allowed (the points are different based on the number of participants of each tournament)Anyone can create their own "group"
Here are some examples:
For the Big Ten Championships, let's say that Thomas Gilman gets assigned the #1 seed, and Nathan Tomasello gets assigned the #2 seed, etc.
The #1 seed for the Big Ten Championships (no matter which weight) gets assigned a point value of 200.
Since you must select a wrestler at all 10 weights, you won't be able to pick more than 4 #1 seeds for your team.
Rules/The Process:
Create a groupInvite participants to your groupIf you want to restrict your group to only your friends, you can make the group private, and assign a group passwordOnce the PreSeeds have been released for a particular tournament, then those need to be updated (either by the group coordinators, or by me). Note: If there are 100 groups for the Big Ten Championship, only 1 group coordinator, or me, needs to update the PreSeeds for that tournament. Obviously there can't be different PreSeeds for the same tournamentOnce the PreSeeds have been set, and the "PreSeeds Are Set" checkbox is set for each respective weight, then users are then able to start submitting their picksUsers, and the group coordinators, and myself, are NOT able to see other users picks until the actual tournament dateAll submissions are locked starting with the day of the tournament (I need to work on allowing submissions till 8:00am, or so, but that's not as important right now)As matches occur, group coordinators, or me, can add match results as the tournament progresses (or when it's over). It's here where each match result gets assigned the points earned by the wrestler (advancement, bonus, placement)If match results are updated real-time (or close to it) you will be able to track your own leaderboards to see where you stand in your group (as well as on WrestleStat against ALL other submissions)In addition to real-time leaderboard, this will also allow me to show the REAL team scores for the tournament. In past tournaments, the PSU site was the only place to get real-time team standings.
Since this is in the test environment, and I don't want people to get confused come tournament time, maybe try and limit the number of people you "invite" to each of your groups. Don't want people getting confused that they did their submissions in the test site when they were thinking it was the real, production site.
That's all I can think of right now. If you run into any issues, or have any questions, comments, recommendations, please let me know ASAP. I've got kind of a tight schedule right now to get this finished up. I'm still working on the leaderboard stuff and I only have 2 or 3 weeks to have this ready.
Thanks everyone, here's a link to the test site:
