OK, I'll bite. Who is PD3 or 2? Been seeing that lately but can't trace the source or figure it out.

PD3 = Pat Downey, Iowa State 184 pounder
PD2 = Pat Downey's Dad

PD2 is the current Exhibit A, when it comes to the argument as to why athletes' parents should not get on internet message boards.

For the full effect, here's a link to CycloneFanatic...just look for any PD2 post. Facebook and/or Twitter can contain some good stuff too from what I understand.

I voted Dean, but I personally think Retherford deserves it. It is possible, maybe likely that Retherford never wins it. If Dean wins out, I think he gets it this year. If Imar wins the NC this year, and is undefeated next year, I think he will get it next year, based on being a 4x champ.

I went out on a limb and picked Other. If Bo goes undefeated, pins his way thru B1G, then caps things off with a victory over Dean in St. Louis, my vote is Nickal.

So far PD3 has more votes than Snyder, Cox, and Martinez combined.

Somebody has a sense of humor.

Nickal clears the way for Retherford, by taking Dean out on Saturday night.

Unfortunately for Bo and Jason, Retherford has a national championship under his belt. So, when voters get to the past performance criteria, they'll have to deal with that.

Dean or Zain.

And despite Olympic glory & past NCAA titles:

It can't be Snyder - limited schedule.
It can't be Cox - too many close (uninspiring) decisions.

That would probably get him the OW, but the Hodge belongs to Dean or Retherford or Martinez. That history criteria is a big deal.

Unless Dean loses the Hodge is his. If he wins out this year he will be a 3 timer with incredibly dominant stats (if he keep up his current pace) in the most stacked weight this year.

If Dean loses the Hodge would go to Zain or Imar with a Cox in a distant 4th. Cox is a winning machine, but this year he hasn't done it in the dominating fashion that the Hodge is meant to reward.

The sad thing is that if Dean wins it this year either Zain or Imar would finish their career without ever winning it. I would think that the one that didn't get it would have to be one of if not the most dominant wrestler never to win the Hodge.

I am in the camp who believes it is Dean's to lose. Ugh, that was painful to admit . . .

I'm afraid Zain is the victim of a weaker weight class this year, and he is not helped by the view that his weight class wasn't so hot last year, either. And if IMar goes undefeated next year, perhaps the best Zain can hope for is a share of the trophy.

Everyone assumes Nickal was telling the whole truth about why he bumped up to 184 this year . . . ;)

Just like Zain may have secured the Hodge for DT in 2014 by taking out Stieber.

Officially perhaps, but realistically Stieber never had a shot as long as Taylor stayed unbeaten. Stieber was a JR, Taylor a SR, and the voters have repeatedly shown they'll give it to a SR if they find one worthy.

True. Ed was also a strong candidate that year. If he hadn't lost to Dean he and DT a likely scenario would've been he and DT splitting votes leaving (also hypothetically unbeaten) Stieber the winner. 165 may have been weaker that year than 149 is this year, but DT was the only unbeaten remaining.

I expected Zain and Dean to be the top 2 in the poll but I am surprised that IMar only has 1 vote. Let's say Nickal takes care of Dean and both Zain and IMar win out. Who would have the better resume? Zain is more dominant but IMar with a 3rd title, one career defeat and moving up and winning a very deep weight class would be tough to beat.

I can see your point, but I still like Zain over IMar at this point in time just based on what Zain's opponents look like when he is done with them.

Shouldn't be a surprise. We got one vote. Everyone agrees the top three candidates are Dean, Zain and Imar in that order. With your one vote, you think Dean wins out or he loses and Zain gets it. For Imar to win most think both Dean and Zain need to lose.

I am one of those people. Zains domination will beat Imars extra title if it comes to that.

Remember.....one vote. With your one vote are you betting both Dean and Zain lose?

I agree with all of that . . . but I believe everything changes once IMar becomes a senior. Whether it should by strict application of criteria, IDK, but I sense that career record and titles get weighted much more heavily once someone doesn't have any more matches to wrestle. Zain can match IMar from here on - and in an even more dominant fashion - but he will not have more titles on his resume, and unless things change in a hurry, he will have more losses on his record.

In other words, Zain has a leg up in 2017 because in-season performance is weighted most heavily. In 2018, body of work will be the main criterion.

Jason goes 167 in 2017-18 and takes IMar's 4th title from him.

Since Bo beat Dean the year before paving the way for Zain to win it in 2017, Jason gets the 2018 Hodge.

2018.....we gotta see what happens. Too much wrestling and weight class changes between here and there, but I suppose a 4 timer would be looked very favorably for the Hodge. As long as he doesn't lose during the season. That matters unless everyone with multiple titles loses.

167?? You're dating yourself...a little :).
I wrestled in the 98lb class as a freshman, when the optional 91lb class existed, which was just after it was moved from 88......

But I think haillions has me by a few years too. lol We all just keep getting bigger. Except at HWT....because that wasn't HWT. It was UNL. Hah!

I'm so old that every time somebody says "University of Nebraska Lincoln", I think they mean Chris Taylor.

Ha, age is just a number...it's just that my number is bigger than yours, and hail's is much bigger than mine, lol...
