NC State setting themselves up to intentionally develop MMA athletes? Not a bad strategy to get some guys to come there, that otherwise wouldn't.
The NC State release only mentions coaching.
Press release doesn't exclude competing, but doesn't mention it at all.
I say this in every Ed Ruth thread, but as easy as he made it look on the mat, he was that easy to talk to. Genuine, kind, and humble. Wasn't perfect, but probably my favorite PSU wrestler.
I remember when someone on here said Ruth didn’t look so strong - and I laughed and laughed
Coincidentally we talked about that last night. In person Ed Ruth looked like he had a jet-pack on under his shirt. Not sure how much he was cutting, but he was a low body fat wrestler.
There's a difference between looking strong (ex: tOSU) and being strong. Watch any match between Bo Nickal and Kollin Moore. If looks won wrestling matches, Kollin Moore would tech Bo Nickal every time.
Didn't quite work out that way, though.
Same thing with DT, Quentin, Easy Ed, Cenzo, etc. The only PSU wrestler who genuinely looked like he was going to outmuscle his opponents was Zain.
I still can’t figure out how he was so strong. His hands must be like a vise because he could lock onto a leg and somehow with barely any grip would pull it in....every single time.
I'll give you that.
That said, look at him vs Matt Wilps in the NCAA finals. Wilps looks most of a weight class bigger, to me.
How about Frank Molinaro? If my memory isn’t failing me.
I agree with that observation. Perhaps Wilps had a decent height advantage to support that visual of being significantly bigger. This is just a guess.
