Was repainting a replica of a sailing ship that looks to be the Mayflower, or at least a ship from that era. I wanted to know what flags she sailed under to paint them correctly so did some research and found some interesting facts.
We all know the Union Jack with its red, white, and blue colors..... 🇬🇧. Never knew what it stood for or how it came about.
Well the flag of England was a white flag with a Red Cross on it and was known as St George’s Cross for an early crusader. King James united Scotland and England and combined the Scottish flag....a white crisscross (called a saltire) on a blue field...... 🏴.....to form the flag of Great Britain. Don’t have an emoji for it but it is a blue field with a Red Cross over white crisscross. That would be the flag the British flew during the Revolutionary War.
Then later Ireland was brought into the United Kingdom in 1801 so the Union Jack was then formed by adding the flag of Ireland.....a white field with a red crisscross/ saltire to form the current Union Jack.
So the Union Jack is a red cross for England, over a blue field and white saltire for Scotland, and a red saltire for Ireland.......🇬🇧......representing a United Kingdom.
Thought today, the funeral for Prince Philip, was an appropriate day for this. I am sure I got some details wrong and Tom the Historian will along with corrections soon!
