Favorite non Penn State college sports team....

I’m a fan of the Penn Quakers and have followed them since the Bilsky and Wohl era. They have great tradition. My brother was a classmate of Governor Rendell and we used to go to Big 5 basketball double headers back on the day. Both the Palestra and Franklin Field, although very dated, are places with a special atmosphere. Anyone remember some close games that Penn State and Temple played in Franklin Field years ago?

Many here will admonish me for this (GLOV) but I grew up a huge ND fan. Dad's a double domer. He was on ND scout team in 56 when Horging won the Heisman then decided to be student manager. My mom is born and raised in South Bend. Two uncle's are alums. My cousin was Captain of women's swim team and was badly injured when their bus crashed in the early 90s. And lastly my grandfather was a firefighter, Battalion Chief actually, in South Bend who died in the line in 1954. When it was suggested I go to ND and live in my grandmother's basement I revolted having just spent 4 years at an all male Jesuit prep school in Boston. My Dad made it to SC for the 85 and 87 ND games and for those old enough you can remember those trips didn't end well for him.

My oldest graduated from Dayton.

Next 2 graduated from Xavier.

Youngest graduated from St. Joe's.

Basketball season is a lot of fun in the Dibbs household.

Most fun though was watching UD beat XU in women's volleyball in the A10 championship at the Palumbo Center about 11 years ago. The teams played with so much energy and the fans (really not that many) really had that certain edge.

I lived in Indiana in the 70's. Loved the Hoosiers and Knight. Attended 2 games in Assembly Hall, Purdue and MSU. Liked Purdue, too, but not like IU. Back then, no ESPN, but all IU and PU games were broadcast. Indiana was just over the top in loving basketball at all levels.

My love for IU basketball has waned a bit after Knight was fired. I absolutely hated George McGinnis when he played for IU and the Pacers.
High School friend was a Northwestern grad and was still living in Chicago when I moved there for work after graduating from PSU. She got primo Tix as a connected NW alum and we sat on bleacher right behind IU bench. Got to observe Bobby Knight up close. What a treat! When NW band showed up all wearing red sweaters with pillows underneath Knight roared with laughter at their creativity and humor!

As a Villanova grad, it's Villanova of course.
Grew up a Penn State and Joe Paterno fan, and was fortunate enough to marry into Penn State! PSUNovaLuvr will tell you that I married her for her Penn State season football tickets.

couldn't resist, Love you 2 ;)

Fixed it for you. The Quakers were my team while I was growing up. They were 78-6 during the Calhoun-Morse era.

Georgetown basketball has been my main team since before the Ewing era began. (My father is an alum and I live in DMV.)

Gotta be honest, when I went to grad school at tOSU in the late 1970s after graduating from PSU, I was a rink rat. Big Flyers fan in those days and played a lot of street hockey--including IMs--but I always wanted to skate and play real hockey. Started learning to skate at the old rink (inside the old hanger that later became the football facility), but it really took off at tOSU when I found out that the rink was a short walk from my dorm. Not only did they have IM ice hockey, which I ended up playing for 5 and 1/2 years, they had a varsity team. For students, tickets were cheap ($1) and skating was $10 a quarter for a pass. So I became a huge tOSU hockey fan--we really had little other access to hockey except an occasional Sunday game on NBC. A number of the players had job at the rink, including helping with the IM program, so we tended to get to know them a bit too. Sadly, I did not play after leaving school as open ice was always late at night and I ended up loaning my equipment to a couple roomies--and it never came back. There was only the one rink until the Chill made hockey popular again in the early 1990s and they built more ice facilities. Still have echoes of that time in my life from time to time. Skating is how I met my first girlfriend, and we ended up in the same church, where I would ultimately meet Mrs. KG. I have an old Jamie Macoun (who played at tOSU) Flames jersey (75th Anniv) which I would wear to Jackets games and ran into a teammate of his there, and then last year while I was out with the student I mentored, we ran into one of his old HS classmates--who was the son of one of those old tOSU players and was himself playing for tOSU. The old rink was small and crowded but a lot of fun when packed out for a Bowling Green game. Saw some pretty good players there too--including Dave Poulin for ND and Kent Morrow for BGSU. The tOSU coach, Jerry Welsh, had played for Johnstown--I am not sure if he was in Slapshot, though it was the right time. many good memories... And, of course, there was no conflict at the time, as PSU varsity hockey was many, many decades off. I still have a game puck from tOSU as well as the puck from the IM championship game we won.

WVU and Clemson! I live in Morgantown and pull for the BB team and also like Neil Brown the new football coach. I could not stand Holgersen. My daughter, son-in-law and nephew graduated from Clemson so I also pull for Dabo and the football team all taking 2nd place to PSU.

You live in Morgantown?Prayers sent!
My dad played for Alabama so I've always rooted for them.

Towson alum so I hang out in 1-AA during football season and the doldrums during hoops season. Lacrosse is usually my time of year but we were 0-6 when the world stopped :( My dad went to Temple so I grew up on Chaney basketball. When I was little, I asked about Penn State’s basketball team. Back then, both were in the A-10 together and my dad replied with ‘Penn State doesn’t have a basketball team’.

Iowa Football. Ferentz is a lunch pail guy. Builds a competitive team year in and year out with mid grade talent. Plays old school offense.....and I'm an old coach. He is vastly under rated.

Very sorry to hear about what happened to your grandfather, he held a very honorable position in life and you have huge reasons to be proud of him. My grandfather was a Chicago firefighter and was part of a 100+ year streak wherein our family had at least one person in the Chicago FD... all things that I’m proud of in turn.

Now to shift gears to some friendly trash talking ;)

As mentioned above, my dad was a Purdue grad and thus raised us all to loathe ND — being in-state rivals who play each other in football every year with Purdue typically not faring well of course. I recall when my younger sisters were just learning to talk but not quite potty trained yet, he would teach them to let mommy and daddy know when they had made “Notre Dame pants” :D

Childhood favorite college teams before attending PSU:

Penn State Football
North Carolina Basketball

So since the preferences began so young, to this day of course I hope Penn State wins in any sport...but for basketball it is still UNC.

There is plenty of videos of me 18 years ago asking my little baby daughter if she had taken a Buckeye in her diaper. Oh, and my mom was a tri-delt at IU so I guess between the two of us we have the state of Indiana covered

I guess I would say Kentucky basketball, but that is only because I live here. The whole town has more life to it when the basketball team is winning. Makes it more fun. That said, I really enjoy the sudden depression that overcomes Lexington after a loss. It’s palpable.

Yes, the WTTV4 out of Indy broadcasts that local stations would carry. Great broadcast teams, great games.

@Connorpozlee I assume you have been to a game at Rupp? What’s it like? It’s right in the downtown, correct. I have been to numerous football venues, but once I retire would love to take in a few of the holy grails of college basketball-Rupp, Assembly Hall, Cameron, Fog Allen, Butler, Mackey Arena to name a few.

Do you remember back in early 70s when David Letterman did the weather on one of the Indy TV stations? He was unpredictable and hilarious.
No , I watched from South Bend TV for the IU and PU games. I knew he had done that though. I started watching 78-79 era same as PSU football.

I’ve been there a few times since I moved to Kentucky. It’s actually kind of a dump, but it is a cool experience. The player introductions are something to remember. Definitely worth doing and downtown Lexington is pretty cool.

I have been to 10 or so games. It’s interesting. If they don’t come out blowing the doors off of the opponent right away there is a great degree of tension in the building. There is almost a feeling of dread. If they do come out of the gate on fire, there is a collective sigh as opposed to euphoria about the start. Rupp is a large arena so it doesn’t have a very smothering feel to it.
It is located downtown. There is a hotel connected to Rupp and another accessible via a walkway. It’s worth checking out. If making a weekend of it, you could check out some of the bourbon distilleries not too far away for tours.
