His parents thought he was graduating, turns out he never enrolled for the fall. Didn't stop penn state from taking his parents money and never telling them that their child didnt sign up for classes.

Here is his photo.

You've got to be kidding. Hopefully he's just embarrassed rather than hurt. Can't believe PSU kept the money and never sent a letter to the parents. Barron's new "civility" I guess.

I don't think there's a check to see if a student is signed up, just a check to see that the signed up are paid.

He withdrew from classes the week before finals, far cry from "never signed up."

Also not sure why you guys would even bring Barron into this?

How very sad for the parents. You drive up to Penn State with such pride, thinking your son is graduating. Then, you find out he was not, and worse, he is missing. I pray they find this young man and he can work out whatever issues he may have, go back to school, and get his degree.

Well, was just going from info in a prior post and was being overly sarcastic about Barron but the emoticon didn't transfer to the post. (That said- he is the guy in charge.)

Not sure what fall even matters since its spring and he was supposed to be in classes in spring to graduate in spring. You walk in December if you complete classes in fall
I took that to mean that he went back to school in the fall to begin his senior year and would have competed his final year, and graduated, this past week. There appears to be some conflicting information, but whatever the facts, lets just hope for a good ending.

To clarify, I found this quote:

"His father, Paul Steindorf, said Sunday that he learned his son was not set to graduate this weekend, although Jon Steindorf told his parents that he wrapped up studies in the fall semester and delayed graduation until this spring."

He apparently was not being honest with his parents about his status, for whatever reason.

I hope he has not done anything to hurt himself beyond that.

+1. Thanks for the clarification.

Ah, I missed that in the article. Thanks.

So the parents never visited him on campus the entire year...or never once looked on line to see his grades/status?
Wow if I'm paying 40k a year you can damn well bet I'm doing both of them.

Child, really? The guy is 23 not a child. I have no idea who paid his tuition. It is not Penn States job to baby sit this "child" to make sure he signs up for classes.

...and just because he signed up for classes doesn't mean that PSU received a dime.

Besides, there's the whole law called FERPA....which means that parents have no rights to know their son/daughter's academic records without student consent.

Another classic example of trying to bash PSU for no reason just because......well......because.

I had a roommate in college who acted all my final semester like he was graduating, then I bumped into one of his profs right after finals and she asked me why he didn't show up for her final (she basically told me she had to fail him, although I think she was careful to not flat out say that).

Anyhow, I hope they find Jon and he's OK. I suspect this kind of stuff happens all the time where students hide their college standing from family/friends and it all comes to a head around graduation time.

My roommate decided he didn't want to be an engineer and went on to do other work he enjoyed without a degree.

The guy was 23 years old. At some point as a parent you have to stop hovering over your kids and let them live their lives as their own.

I'd say that point starts right after I stop paying for his college. Until then, I want to know my kid's major, what classes he's taking and how he's doing. The key is to be engaged and involved without being overbearing and controlling.

If his parents paid tuition, and the kid did not register for (or withdrew from) classes, the kid could have walked into the burser's office (or whatever it is called these days, and gotten a refund for his tuition. And done whatever he wanted with that money.
Don't ask me how I know this lol

Depending on when the "transaction" took place, that's not necessarily true.

Unfortunately, every "overbearing and controlling" parent I know defines their behavior as "engaged and involved".

It has been this way for years.

Students can grant their parents access to grades, etc. in eLion.

The only thing that parents can see on e-lion are bills, payments, schedules and final posted grades. The student has to grant permission for these. You cannot see grades of classes in progress, only final at the end of the semester grades.

I was just on campus yesterday helping my son organize his apartment and pack for th summer (he just finished junior year).Lots of families with graduates waking and and taking t. Mu heart goes out to these parents who must feel very helpless about their son's disappearance.
